Today, officials at Technology Educational Achievement, or teach, are pleased with the state's progress, says Doris J. Hanson, the agency's executive director. "Twenty-two percent of [the state's more than 2,000] school buildings are wired," Hanson says. "We're right on target." The state plans to spend $152 million on technology in K-12 schools during the fiscal 2000-01 biennium, which began July 1, down from $190.9 million during the previous biennium, Hanson says. Last fiscal year, the state spent $120 million on four initiatives to wire schools and provide professional development for teachers. The effort is part of Republican Gov. Tommy G. Thompson's five-year, $500 million technology plan to ensure that K-12 schools, libraries, and colleges have access to cutting-edge technology and know how to use it properly. According to the plan, all public schools should be wired by the end of 2002.
