When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. Extractions: Previous section Next section Contents Pathways ... home page Local Efforts Many local districts are working on distance learning technology projects in the state. Approximately 22 groups are planning fiber optics-based systems. An additional 20 Instructional Television Fixed Services (ITFS) sites are in operation, and local districts are planning the expansion and operation of several of these sites. The state has decided not to create a state-level, distance learning system or network, but to allow projects to be created at a local or regional level. Then a backbone infrastructure would be created to link these projects. State Efforts The Wisconsin Educational Communications Board (ECB), the licensee of six of the state's eight public television stations, coordinates telecommunications planning efforts among state education institutions. ECB works with the University of Wisconsin system, the Department of Public Instruction, and the Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education (VTAE) system. In August 1989, the state legislature created a 15-member Information Technology Advisory Board (ITAB) to manage a comprehensive study and make recommendations for improving Wisconsin's data processing and telecommunications systems, including education services. The ITAB published a report in November 1990 entitled Information Technology Management in Wisconsin. One of the report's major recommendations was the formation of a statutory board on information technology under the governance of the Department of Administration. Another priority identified in the ITAB report is the implementation of strategic business and information technology planning throughout all state agencies. A recommendation affecting education was to provide a centralized support for the independent, regional educational telecommunications initiatives that have been established throughout the state.

Archive Email this Print this In 1997, when Congress reauthorized the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 97), they included the requirement that states make mediation available whenever a due process hearing has been requested. Congress recognized that in states where mediation was available, "parents and schools have resolved their differences amicably, making decisions with the childs best interest in mind." While the State Education Agency is responsible for providing mediation services, the process ultimately depends on the participation of administrators and parents in order to be successful. This paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of mediation from an administrators perspective in order to help other administrators make an informed decision about whether it is in the best interest of their school district, and ultimately the students they serve, for them to participate.

Extractions: and understanding. Helping you find what your child needs... Advocacy Support Groups Education Children and adolescents with mental health problems are the most under-served disability group. Approximately 12 percent of children under 18 nationwide, 7.5 to 9.5 million, suffer from problems that warrant mental health treatment. However, 70 to 80 percent of these children get inappropriate mental health services or no help at all. And, perhaps more unfortunate, is the stigma associated with having a child with an emotional, behavioral, or mental disorder. Parents may blame themselves and may be too embarrassed to discuss the possibility of a mental disorder with an outside source. There are no simple answers. But that is why we are here to ease the frustration of finding help. We are a statewide not-for-profit organization run by families for families that include children and adolescents who have emotional, behavioral, and mental disorders. Today, thousands of families turn to us. We help parents develop skills necessary to advocate for their families and children. Wisconsin Family Ties continues to be run by families like yours and is the only resource and support agency of its kind in Wisconsin. We know what you're going through. We're here to help empower you to find the level of care you feel your child needs. Call us today.
