Kellogg Foundation and administered by the American Medical Student Association Foundation (AMSA). The ICHFP, over the course of three-and-a-half years, created an alliance to foster action-oriented partnerships between communities, academic institutions, and students to create a healthier future for communities in different geographic areas. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Community organizations applied for the grant and worked with academic institutions to form an ICHFP team of health professional students. Each team was comprised of at least two community representatives, five students (one medical, one nursing, one public health and two students from two other disciplines), five faculty members and one community health setting representative. The teams represented at least thirteen individuals of varying backgrounds and experience. The program strived to empower communities and encouraged the ICHFP team to determine current health issues, identified a specific health need in a particular community, and developed and implement methods of improving the health of its members. The academic institution established deeper relationships with community leaders and community organizations and participated in developing new methods of learning, teaching and facilitating the provision of community service.

Extractions: Nutrition in Schools By Jill S. Hueter, J.D. Candidate On April 22, 2002, the Texas Education Agency issued a new policy regarding the sale of foods of minimal nutritional value (FMNV) in schools to be implemented for the start of the 2002-03 school year. The policy is a response to a January 16, 2001 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) memorandum, which clarified existing regulations on competitive foods. Competitive foods are foods sold outside of the school meal program. Prior to the USDA memorandum, many Texas schools had banned vending machines from the cafeteria but allowed them in other eating areas. The new policy defines the terms food service area and meal period. FMNV may not be available in any area in which reimbursable meals are either served and/or eaten, including areas outside the traditional cafeteria such as courtyards, hallways, and classrooms. Meal periods include both the time of serving and the time allotted to students for eating their meals. The idea behind the policy is to encourage students to eat healthier meals and to reduce childhood obesity. Schools that fail to comply may lose their school lunch subsidies for all meals served on the day of the violation. The USDA has established four categories of FMNV: soft drinks, water ices, chewing gum, and certain candies (e.g., hard candy, jellies and gums, marshmallow candies, licorice, and candy-coated popcorn). These foods provide less than 5% of the recommended dietary allowance for key nutrients. Most chocolate bars, potato chips, and ice cream still make the cut under regulations set forth by the USDA. The policy does not address vending machines and does not require that schools remove vending machines. It requires that during meal periods, vending machines stocked with FMNV must be unplugged or locked, restocked with items not prohibited or placed in areas where food is neither served nor eaten.

Public assistance programs help them obtain the necessities until they can support themselves. The Food Stamp program is one such program, providing families with money to buy food. But learning how to put that money to its best use can be difficult. The Families First-Nutrition Education and Wellness Systems (FF-NEWS) program was designed to address this need. FF-NEWS is simultaneously an outreach and an intervention program for participants in the Food Stamp Program's Nutrition Education. Through FF-NEWS, Food Stamp participants learn how to plan, select, and prepare meals consistent with their cultural traditions and family resources, while improving their overall health, and that of their family members. The West Virginia State College Cooperative Extension Programs is the only provider of FF-NEWS in West Virginia. The program is comprised of four distinct modules - Food Preference and Nutrition Knowledge, Health Status and Age-Related Nutrition, Managing Food Dollars, and Food Quality and Safety. Each module is made up of individual lessons, fifty-six in total. The instructional features are varied, and recognize that "not everything works with everyone." The foundation of the FF-NEWS approach is that some of us must see, others must hear, and others must see, hear, and do; still others must interact as they see, hear, and do!
