Boston, MA This project will analyze data from a longitudinal survey of nearly 17,000 adolescents, now 14 to 18 years old, who have been tracked since 1996 with annual assessment of diet, activity, weight control practices, and height and weight. The data from 1996-2000 will be used to describe changes in dietary patterns and diet quality during adolescence and the association of those changes with overall diet quality and the development of obesity. Specific aspects of diet quality that will be examined include: (1) intake of calories from fat, soft drinks, and other sources of added sugar; (2) breakfast consumption; and (3) a glycemic index based on intake of saturated fat and low-fat foods, added sugar, and fiber. Results will be useful for the design of obesity prevention programs for children and adolescents.

Health var doctitle=document.title document.write(doctitle) Add to My NCSL Health Care Program Updated: February 6, 2004 A leading cause of blindness, kidney disease, heart disease and amputations, diabetes claims the lives of more than 193,000 Americans each year. According to the CDC, it is the country's sixth leading cause of death by disease. Approximately 17 million Americans have diabetes, but one-third of those are undiagnosed. As of December 2003, forty-six states have some type of laws requiring health insurance coverage to include treatment for diabetes. The states not included are Alabama, Idaho, North Dakota and Ohio. In 2001, laws were signed in Michigan, Montana, Oregon and Wyoming. In 2002, Georgia and Wisconsin each passed an expansion of current coverage requirements. In 2003 the Hawaii adopted a resolution to clarify its mandate of diabetes education coverage. About 17 million Americans have diabetes today, including about 16 million with Type 2. In addition, at least 16 million more Americans have pre-diabetes a condition that raises a person's risk of getting type 2 diabetes. However, a diagnosis of pre-diabetes does not mean that diabetes is inevitable, and the new campaign aims at encouraging people to take modest steps that will reduce their risks. Nationally, diabetes has increased nearly 50 percent in the past 10 years alone, according to CDC estimates.

Extractions: Heart Disease Kills West Virginians Nutrition education programs are needed to reduce the risk of heart disease in Wood County, West Virginia. Heart disease is the leading cause of death both in the United States and in the West Virginia Wood County School district. Smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles are controllable risk factors related to heart disease. Additional risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and diabetes. The 1998 West Virginia Behavior Risk Factor Survey documents West Virginia as first in national obesity and third in sedentary lifestyle and smoking. In 1998, 43.7% of adults in West Virginia reported being physically inactive. In 1999, adults in West Virginia were 25% more likely to be obese and 24% more likely to report high cholesterol levels than their peers nationwide (West Virginia Health Statistics Center). According to the West Virginia Health Status Atlas, during 2000 there were 17.8 deaths from heart disease each day in West Virginia. Top When Do Heart Disease Risk Factors Develop?
Extractions: Health education in schools can reduce the prevalence of health risk behaviors among young people. For example, health education resulted in a 37% reduction in the onset of smoking among 7th graders. In addition, obese girls in the 6th and 8th grades lost weight through a program at school, and students who attended a school-based life-skills training program were less likely than other students to smoke or use alcohol or marijuana. Program Example CSHPs provide a focal point for collaboration and are a good use of resources to improve the health of youth and the adults they will become. These results show how a coordinated school health program improves learning, performance, and health for students and teachers. Contact Information Florida Department of Education

Extractions: CSG Chief Education Policy Analyst Healthy Hearts program director Dr. Eloise Elliott (also a senior editor for pecentral.org) learned technology skills on her own while still a graduate student at Virginia Tech. There, she said, professors expected their students to arrive on campus technologically literate or to quickly learn once they arrived. Those self-taught skills helped Elliott, now Associate Professor in the Department of Human Performance at Concord College in Athens, WV, to create an Internet instructional module that teaches intermediate grade children about cardiovascular health. The program focuses on the effects of physical activity, nutrition, and tobacco use on the heart. HealthyHearts4Kids.org is a web site dedicated to web-based learning for children in West Virginia and New York, as well as in select schools in northern Arizona, Virginia, and Kentucky. The program is part of the non-profit organization, eLearning for Kids, Inc. Dr. Elliott and the Healthy Hearts staff recently gave the site a facelift, adding games and rewards for students who complete the learning modules.
