Click here for the schedule Click here for pictures of the 2003 camp. Course Description: Geology 404: Geology Field Camp Field Camp is a 5-week course worth 6 semester credits. The course emphasizes field mapping with good doses of stratigraphy, structural geology, regional geology, as well as some surficial geology. The course is divided between the Black Hills of South Dakota and southwestern Montana. Approximately the first two weeks are spent in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota where students learn the Paleozoic stratigraphy and do two mapping projects. There is then a 4-day trip across Wyoming with stops including a Tertiary coal mine, the Big Horn Mountains, and Yellowstone National Park. Approximately the last two weeks are spent at Dillon, Montana, where there are two additional mapping projects. During the Camp we stay in dormitories at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, and the University of Montana-Western in Dillon. Click here for a map.

The project will involve inquiry-based and experimental learning for high school students and teachers with the overall goal of building an ecological model. Dr. Manzo and Dr. Canterbury are working with the Department of Education and many other groups, including Marshall University. Monthly updates will be placed on a new web site for the project and participants of the project will be able to learn about environmental conservation issues pertaining to the project, and how we can conserve for birds and wildlife in an urbanized landscape. Extractions: Each fall more than 80,000 parents, children, Harley bikers, and church groups journey to a 28-mile-long (45-kilometer-long) section of West Virginia's Gauley River. They're young and old, gay and straight, first-timers and river rats. They come from places as close as Fayetteville, West Virginia, and as far as Frankfurt, Germany, many making the trip year after year. It has become a right of passage. But even though the river's Class V-plus rapids are wild enough to host the World Rafting Championships (they were held there in 2001), other rivers are wetter. Extractions: The safety, health, and economic well being of West Virginia's citizens are important to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which is involved in water, resource, mapping, and land-use issues in many parts of the State. Through cooperative programs with many State and local agencies, the USGS is studying coal extraction and its effects and assessing water quality and mineral potential. Through national programs, citizens of West Virginia have access to the thousands of map, book, and digital products of the USGS. This Fact Sheet details some of the programs and activities of the USGS in West Virginia. Coal accounts for between 20 and 25 percent of the total energy used and more than 50 percent of the electricity generated in the United States. Coal from Appalachian Basin fields in West Virginia is a major resource for the Nation. Assessment of potential coal development recognizes both physical constraints and societal restrictions on mining. Since 1988, the USGS, in cooperation with the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES), has identified these restrictions as part of a national effort to analyze the relation between mining restrictions and potential coal availability. New technologies that use coal will require resources of specific and known quality. The economics of coal utilization depend on mining and transportation costs. Coal quality affects those costs, especially with respect to waste disposal. For example, high concentrations of sulfur in coal beds and associated rocks may produce acid drainage after mining or acid rain after combustion but may be beneficial in a synthetic fuel process. The USGS, is supplying information to the WVGES, for development of cost-effective strategies to predict areas of high potential for acid production, to mitigate acidity problems, and to cleanup existing contamination.

C., with a teacher escort for the national finals. The national competition is scheduled for May 25 - 26, 2004. The national competitors will compete for a $25,000 first-place college scholarship and lifetime subscription to National Geographic magazine. Second and third place winners will receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively.
