Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) Experiential education is inspired by great hope. It rests on a set of principles that speak to an active and participatory educational experience aimed at fostering a learning of engaged experimentation, critical reflection, and application. Great results are often achieved in programs built on the philosophy of experiential education. The Association for Experiential Education has as a major part of its mission the promotion of the experiential education worldwide. In this promotion there is a collective hope that we might inspire hope in other educators, human service workers, organizational consultants, and other change agents. In AEE's Strategic Plan, a major component was the development of a marketing and advocacy plan (MAP). The strategic plan saw the MAP as critical for both AEE as an organization and experiential education as a philosophy of educational reform. Promoting the association and experiential education were outlined as critical tasks during the next five years (we are currently in year two). In mid-May, the leadership of the Association will be meeting in Denver as part of our annual leadership summit. This event will focus heavily on the MAP. The organization has begun work with Dev Pathik, an organizational member, on developing a marketing strategy. He will be working with the Regions, Professional Groups, Board, and Staff to further develop this plan and explore further ways to promote the association and experiential education.

Extractions: GLICKMAN AWARDS $6 MILLION IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GRANTS WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2000 Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman today announced $6 million in grants to encourage housing, community facilities and economic development in low-income rural communities. "These grants will help rural communities help themselves," said Glickman. "They will help provide the training and technical assistance essential to improving rural economies." USDA's Rural Community Development Initiative provides funds to help private, nonprofit, community-based development organizations and low-income communities improve their ability to develop rural housing and community facilities and to improve economic growth. Recipients were required to obtain matching funds, doubling the value of the USDA grants. Grant recipients will provide training and technical assistance to eligible nonprofit community-development organizations and low-income communities located in rural areas with populations of 50,000 or less. Technical assistance includes: setting up homeownership education programs; supporting micro-enterprises, cooperatives and sustainable development; and providing training to develop strategic plans, hire staff and oversee board operations and management.
