Extractions: On October 1, 2002, the Monongalia County Family Resource Network, headed by Brandi Potock, was awarded a $2.04 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund a four-year project - West Virginia Family Connections - to create infrastructure in West Virginia to support families in the development and education of young children. Home visiting programs have been a major strategy in West Virginia and nationally to address the risk factors of children living in poverty. Supporters of these programs believe that a professional or trained paraprofessional can help children overcome the risks associated with poverty by providing parent education and linking low-income families with resources in the community to help their children grow and prosper.
