This document is written to accompany Mark Nodine's online Welsh lessons and used to be an appendix of that document, although I think it has now been removed from there (which makes the huge numbers of accesses to it the more confusing). It aims to answer, from the - perhaps necessarily opinionated - standpoint of a native Welsh speaker, some questions about the historical, political and cultural background of the language that he or I think might be asked by a learner from outside that culture. Extractions: The language of Wales, more properly called Cymraeg in preference to Welsh (A Germanic word denoting "foreigner"), belongs to a branch of Celtic, an Indo-European language. The Welsh themselves are descendants of the Galatians, to whom Paul wrote his famous letter. Their language is a distant cousin to Irish and Scots Gaelic and a close brother to Breton. Welsh is still used by about half a million people within Wales and possibly another few hundred thousand in England and other areas overseas. In most heavily populated areas of Wales, such as the Southeast (containing the large urban centers of Cardiff, Newport and Swansea), the normal language of everyday life is English, but there are other areas, notably in the Western and Northern regions, (Gwynedd and Dyfed particularly) where the Welsh language remains strong and highly visible. The Welsh word for their country is Cymru (Kumree), the land of the Comrades; the people are known as Cymry (Kumree) and the language as Cymraeg (Kumrige). Regional differences in spoken Welsh do not make speakers in one area unintelligible to those in another (as is so often claimed), standard Welsh is understood by Welsh speakers everywhere.

Extractions: Welsh is one of the oldest languages that is still in use in the world today. It is far from a 'dead' language. It is spoken by over 750,000 people and this figure is rising steadily. The further west and north you go in Wales the more that you will find Welsh spoken. Welsh is a phonetic language (you say what you see) and, despite its apparent complexity, this makes it an easy language to read, (even if you don't necessarily understand everything that you're reading). The course should enable you to learn Welsh in a fun way, with lots of helpful audio pronunciation guides, and an extremely useful and innovative audio dictionary. It is intended as an enjoyable and informative introduction to the Welsh language, not a serious discourse on the technicalities, after all, where's the fun in that? Extractions: Advanced search Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru is the first standard historical Welsh dictionary, broadly comparable in method and scope with The Oxford English Dictionary , but midway in format between that dictionary and the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary . It presents in alphabetical order the vocabulary of the Welsh language from the remnants of Old Welsh, through the abundant literature of the Medieval and Modern periods, to the explosion of vocabulary arising from the ever-increasing use of the language in all fields of twentieth-century life. This vocabulary is defined in Welsh, but English equivalents are also given. Detailed attention is given to variant forms, common collocations, and etymology. The work is based upon a collection of some two million citation slips, amassed by voluntary readers as well as members of the Dictionary staff and still being added to. A reading program was established in 1921 at the National Library of Wales with a small team of salaried staff and the Rev. J. Bodvan Anwyl as Secretary who organized a host of voluntary readers. Editorial work commenced during the 1948/9 session under the editorship of R. J. Thomas, and the Dictionary is being published in 64-page parts. By 1967 Parts 1-21 had been published and they were bound as Volume I (
