It was originally known as the Cambrian Benevolent Society. Mr.Owen and his wife came to the midwest from Wales in the 1880s. Although Emporia itself was not founded as a Welsh colony, the Welsh people began settling in Lyon County before the civil war. Their descendants makeup a large percentage of the population of the county today. The Emporia Welsh have contributed much to the musical life of America. The all Kansas Music Competition and festival originally established at Kansas State Teachers College (now Emporia State University) grew out of the old Welsh music festivals and competitive contests known as eisteddfodau. The Kansas State Music Competition is the oldest of its kind in the United States and has served as a pattern for similar contests all over the country. Extractions: The Welsh Society of Vancouver can trace its roots back to 1908 when the first Welsh Society, "The Cymrodorion Society", was formed in Vancouver by Welsh immigrants and their descendants. This group was instrumental in introducing Welsh culture and tradition to their new country. A St. David's Day social and musical evening was organized, a tradition that is carried out to this day on or about March 1. In 1924 the Cambrian Society was formed and it was with donations and volunteer labour that the Cambrian Hall was built at 17th and Main. The official opening of the hall on September 1st 1929 was celebrated with a grand concert. Financially, the Cambrian Hall barely survived the Depression. Rummage sales and "Teas" run by the women raised funds to maintain it. The war years also took their toll, but again the women kept up their charity work and sent parcels to the men overseas.
