    Extractions: In recent years, public recognition has been given to the artistic and cultural influences which different nationalities have contributed to American culture (such as the Spanish architectural influence in the southwestern portion of the US or the French architectural influence evident in New Orleans). The Welsh influence has largely been overlooked. This project, a touring portfolio/exhibit, is an attempt to rectify this situation and bring a consciousness of contemporary Welsh art as it exists on both sides of the Atlantic. Welsh artistic and literary experiences go back as far as its Celtic origins in earliest recorded history. Wales is a small, beautiful country with a unique heritage, culture and language. The strength and richness of the Welsh culture stems from over one thousand years of struggle to maintain its individual identity. Far from being an anachronism, Wales symbolizes the way in which a small country has contributed some of its traditions and talents to the world - the poetry of Dylan Thomas, the plays of Emlyn Williams, the acting of Richard Burton, the strong tradition of the male voice choir, the art of Augustus John, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, and the movies of D. W. Griffith. This project, a portfolio/exhibit, encompasses the literary and artistic traditions which are so deeply rooted in Welsh culture. The Welsh-American artists provide 14 prints and the Welsh poets provide 14 poems, each poem exquisitely enhanced by the well known Welsh calligrapher

    Extractions: Rehoboth Welsh Chapel (Capel Cymraeg Rehoboth) is located in Delta, Pennsylvania, USA (in Southern York County, where the Susquehanna River crosses the Mason-Dixon Line). It is a non-denominational Christian church which specializes in conducting religious services and musical events in the Welsh tradition. It regularly conducts bi-lingual (Welsh/English) worship services. To see a history of the church, click here. A worship service is held at the church at 6:00 P.M. on all Sundays (except when special events are held). There is also a Welsh Language Class which meets at 5:00 P.M. on most Sundays to study conversational Welsh. Both the class and the service are open to everyone. There is no charge for the Welsh language instruction and beginners are welcome at any time. The Rev. Richard Price Baskwill is the Pastor of Rehoboth. On the first Sunday in May and the second Sunday in October the church holds a Gymanfa Ganu (Singing Festival) at 2:30 P.M. The history of Welsh folk dancing is quite a sad one. With the advent of the Non-conformist sects in the 18th and 19th centuries, the chapels saw the Welsh folk arts and customs as ones that were very sinful and not in keeping with chapel teaching. The chapels, chapel-folk, deacons and preachers, some of them the greats of their day like Thomas Charles, Bala, did their utmost to stamp out all sorts of "sinful" folk entertainment such as dancing, folk singing, Mabsant festivals and folk music generally, except, of course, hymn singing and music in the chapels. People had to conform (!!) to peer pressure in the Welsh and Welsh-speaking society, although some did resist the pressure and continued to dance (but only after closing the curtains of the house first!!).

    Extractions: The nebulous definition of Welshness has been changing continuously throughout history. At one time, being Catholic was a major component of being Welsh, which later changed to Protestantism in response to the establishment of the Anglican church, while modern Wales has been labeled by some as a “post-Christian era” in which very few are religious (Jenkins, 20.2.01). Some people, such as Englishman Simon Heffer, find it hard to believe that there can be anything distinctively Welsh, and that there is no such thing as Welsh nationalism, since Wales was never a nation (Hargreaves, 31.1.01). However, Wales has been historically recognized as a nation, great as internal division and strife might have usually been (Jones, 06.3.01). In 1267, the English government first acknowledged a Welsh leader, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, as prince of Wales for himself and his heirs ( Brut , pg 259). This title “served notice that he was proclaiming…a national struggle of which he was the leader” (Davies, pg 320).
