Extractions: Vernon Patao is going to Atlanta. It may be for a day. It may be for two weeks. He won't know just how long his stay at the Olympic village will be until he arrives tomorrow. Only then will the 141-pound weightlifter from Kahului, Maui, find out if he's competing in his second Olympics. After a very poor showing at the World Championships, the U.S. was originally given three slots in the Olympic weightlifting, a number that grew to five last month. The International Weightlifting Federation has now promised eight spots to the Americans for the July 20-30 competition at the Georgia World Congress Center. Patao is ranked seventh on the 10-member team. "I'm pretty sure I'm going to lift, but we won't know until we get there," said Patao, who would be competing in the 64-kilogram division next Monday. "It's hard to think about it, so I've kept my focus on my training and not worried about anything else. I don't want to think that I've wasted my time.

The History Of Weightlifting of lifting traces back to the beginning of recorded history where man s The first modern day Olympics were held in 1896 and weightlifting was included as http://www.usaweightlifting.org/history_of_ol.html
Extractions: The History of Weightlifting The genealogy of lifting traces back to the beginning of recorded history where man's fascination with physical prowess can be found among numerous ancient writings. A 5,000-year-old Chinese text tells of prospective soldiers having to pass lifting tests. Ancient Greek sculptures also depict lifting feats. The weights were generally stones, but later gave way to dumbbells. The origin of the word dumbbells comes from the practice of removing clappers from bells, rendering them soundless during lifting. The U.S. men, after reigning as World and Olympic Champions through the 1930's, '40s and '50s, were ranked 15th in the world in 1996 after a successful Olympic Games performance in Atlanta, GA. The U.S. junior men are ranked 13th in the world. In 2000, Oscar Chaplin III was Junior World Champion in the 77kg weight class and the United States first and only ever gold medal for Junior Men. Women's weightlifting has been conducted at the World Championships level since 1987. U.S. women have won medals in eight of the thirteen World Championships and continue to be a power in the world arena. In 1994, U.S. lifter Robin Goad was the World Champion in the 50kg class

Extractions: Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics. Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.
