"I have gone through a lot of difficulty at home today I lifted not only weights but my country as well," said de Araujo, who wore a plain white vest sporting the five Olympic rings as his team uniform. De Araujo, one of four East Timorese competitors in Sydney, came last in the men's 56 kg weight class, but his participation alone was hailed as a victory. The former schoolteacher's homeland was ravaged by pro-Indonesia militia last year after East Timor voted overwhelmingly for independence. De Araujo's Olympic teammate, boxer Victor Ramos, was forced to flee for his life into the territory's mountains as the militia launched a wave of killing and destruction. The weightlifter won hearts around the world Friday as he broke into a jig when he and his fellow East Timorese athletes entered Sydney's Olympic stadium to massive applause during the spectacular opening ceremony.

Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

So I would be first to admit that I don't know all the facts about iron game history. However, in my 38 years as an iron game enthusiast, I've obtained a lot of information. Aside from the books I've obtained for reference, I've also been in contact with several iron game historians around the world who at times have provided me with some interesting and relevant facts. Thus I've written this series to help interested parties become more aware of their iron game heritage. In early days of the iron game, back in the late nineteenth century, in an effort to organize iron game events into a legitimate sport "it was all called weightlifting" . That includes events like shot putting, tug-of-war, as well as the exercises performed with dumbbells and barbells. Early on the throwing events found a home in track and field. So that left the barbell and dumbbell crowd to form their own group. Starting in the late nineteenth century, pioneers of
Extractions: The Girl's Game - ABC Radio with Amanda Smith, 29 September 2000 Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history. There are those who have dominated, like the great Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen who became the first woman to win four gold medals in a single Games, and Larissa Latynina of the Soviet Union, whose nine gold, five silver and four bronze over the course of three Olympiads remains a record for men and women. There are those who are renown for their "firsts" like Nadia Comanici who became the first Olympic gymnast male or female to score a perfect 10 in competition and American Joan Benoit who won the first womens Olympic marathon in 1984. Women athletes in many countries have historically made a disproportionately high contribution to the medals count at the Games. This has certainly been true for Australia. In certain Olympic sports, particularly swimming and track and field, Australian women have been outstanding. For example in track and field up to and including Atlanta, since 1948 women have constituted just over 30% of the track and field team but have won 75% of all medals and 11 out of 14 gold medals.

It was the second time in 12 years that Bulgarian weightlifters have been ejected from an Olympics for using the same drug, and the positive tests cast uncertainty upon the very future of the sport as an Olympic event. The International Olympic Committee said that gold medalist Izabela Dragneva the first women's weightlifting champion in Olympic history and men's bronze medalist Sevdalin Minchev tested positive for banned diuretics at the Sydney Games. They were the second and third Bulgarian lifters found with the banned drug furosemide in their systems at these games. Both were ordered to return their medals and leave the Olympic Village. The gold one goes to American Tara Nott. (sportsbusinessnews.com)

Extractions: Weightlifting Olympic weightlifting is perhaps best personified by Turkeys Naim Suleymanoglu. Dubbed the "Pocket Hercules" Suleymanoglu was not a big man, but he had a big heart, and was immensely strong. Standing just 140 centimetres tall and weighing in at around 60 kilograms, Suleymanoglu won the under 60kgs gold medal in 1988 with a combined weight over the snatch and clean and jerk of 342.5kgs. That weight was enough to give him victory by an amazing 30kgs. To prove it was no fluke, the Turk repeated his victories in 1992 and 1996 to become the sports first three-time gold medallist. Those sorts of feats have helped make weightlifting one of the Olympic movements most popular events.
