There are a few key things to know. First, layering is the way to go. Second, wool is great and cotton is not good at all for cold-weather wear. These things are great for use in any winter activity. After writing the above, I have listened to Jim Phillips, also known as Mr. Cold, speak on staying warm in cold weather. His ideas obviously work in the worst possible conditions and deserve our attention. He has plunged into freezing water, then spent the night in sub-zero weather without drying off, or having the benefit of fire or shelter, to prove the effectiveness of his clothing ideas. He makes some special clothes called "Thermal Johns" or "TJs" incorporating all his cold weather research. They would be an excellent investment which I recommend.
