British Water Ski World Class Programmes British water Ski is one of only 25 sports to have World Class Programmes up Likeall non olympic sports these are funded on two year programmes in line with http://www.britishwaterski.co.uk/worldclass/welcome.htm
Extractions: The Government wants to motivate the population to participate in sport. One way they looked to do this was through establishing successful sports to assist in funding to win medals and gain success. Tournament and Disabled Water Skiing had an excellent track record and they chose to back these disciplines. Wakeboarding, Cable Skiing, Barefoot and Racing were also put forward but either these disciplines did not have a big enough following on the World Stage (i.e. not enough countries competing at a World Championships) or their organisation was not as advanced internationally. Success has been met though with both the Tournament and Disabled squads meeting every goal set for them. 5 years in to World Class though the Lottery income has fallen and UK Sport have been under pressure with their budgets. Unfortunately, as it was the only non Paralympic sports funded in the World Class system, the Disadled programme has been closed by UK Sport.

Search Waterskiing / Wakeboarding What It Takes To Become An Olympic Sport As the world awaits the infamous torch to officially begin the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the waterskiing world anxiously awaits a milestone of its own. It is so close we can almost taste it. Will waterskiing become an Olympic sport and be represented in the Athens Greece 2004 Olympics ? After years of hard work to get the sport into the games, the decision is set to be made in September. THE ARGUEMENTS
Extractions: Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

Extractions: from Dr. Louis Grivetti, the project's compiler: This year, 1996, marks the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic movement. In this spirit of celebration we acknowledge and recognize the names and publications of more than 50,000 historical and contemporary scholars, linked by the thread of a united, common interest in athletics, sport, and recreation. Athletics, games, leisure pursuits, physical education, play activities, and sports lie at the junction between the humanities, social sciences, and biological-medical sciences. While athletic activities most likely had their origin in military training, it is difficult in modern times to separate each theme: athletics from games, games from leisure pursuits and physical education, physical education from play, play from recreation, or recreation from sports. During past and present centuries research on human athletics, games, play, recreation, and sports has been conducted by a broad range of scientists, whether dietitians, nutritionists, physiologists, or physicians. Research on these themes also has been conducted by a broad range of scholars representing the humanities and social sciences, whether anthropologists, artists, classicists, dancers, economists, geographers, historians, musicians, psychologists, social theorists, or sociologists.

Sport Information One new olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta Official Medal sport in Barcelona,1992; Basketball 1904, St 1984, Los Angeles; water skiing 1972, Munich http://www.ausport.gov.au/info/factsheets/demo.html
Extractions: Olympic Factsheets Since 1904 there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later become official sports, such as basketball, badminton, baseball and tennis. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included as an opportunity to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games. They have since evolved into a much more important aspect of the Olympic Games. Today, participation in the Olympics (Winter or Summer) as a demonstration sport or event often serves as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic sport. The sport must first be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the conditions that it has an International Federation (IF) and that this Federation has held a World Championship competition. The sport may then be included as a demonstration sport, and the sport's International Federation may make an application to the IOC for consideration as an Olympic Sport. This application process must take place a minimum of six years before a scheduled Olympic Games. The demonstration sports at Barcelona were Taekwondo (a form of Martial Arts), Roller Hockey and Basque pelota, a local ball game, having appeared in Paris in 1924 and Mexico in 1968. There are no proposed demonstration sports on the Atlanta programme. One new Olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta - women's softball; and three new disciplines will be introduced - women's soccer, mountain bike racing and beach volleyball. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include:

It is widely used in the manufacture of insulation and textiles. It is also used as a reinforcing agent for many plastic products, the result being a composite material called glass-reinforced plastic or GRP, also known as glass-fiber reinforced epoxy (GRE). Glassmakers throughout history had experimented with glass fibers, but innovations such as fiberglass were only made possible with the advent of finer machine-tooling. In 1893, Edward Drummond Libbey exhibited a dress at the World Columbian Exposition incorporating glass fibers with the diameter and texture of silk fibers.
