It is as if, by its very nature, the valley commands a relationship with those who set foot here. One can travel the world hiking, skiing, climbing, and exploring; Squaw Valley's beauty will still impress. Those who have been involved as team members, visitors, or "locals" proudly attest to an inexplicable connection with the valley. Many have contributed to Squaw's founding and growth. In 1946, Squaw Valley worked its magic on a young man named Alexander Cushing, who had traveled with friends to the Sierra Nevada on a four day train ride from the East Coast. Cushing, then a lawyer on Wall Street, had served in the Navy and was ready for a change. "The war turns the world upside down and I was having a hard time adjusting" he recalls. The strain of duty left him with solid impressions of life's fragility, and of the importance of living life to the fullest. So, as many have before and since, Cushing headed west. On his first day skiing at Sugar Bowl, Cushing did the "unmentionable" and broke his ankle. As the fourth at Bridge, his friends demanded he stay. Always optimistic, Cushing contented himself relaxing on the sundeck and watching other skiers. While there, he heard a young man named Wayne Poulsen speak of a nearby place with the best skiing in the country. Intrigued by Poulsen's statement, Cushing asked to see this place, and soon found himself on crutches, watching from the meadow while his friends hiked and schussed the glorious peaks of Squaw Valley.

However, a page in his movie notes (listing titles) suggests that many of the 8mm films may have been completed before May 14, 1941. All films are without sound. Watson completed the Mt Baker traverse from Kulshan cabin to Baker lodge with Andy Hennig and Erick Larson on May 13, 1939. The heart of the film is from this trip. Hennig wears a Tyrolean hat and carries a long ice axe. Larson wears a light colored jacket and has no ice axe. Watson filled out the film with scenes of other skiers filmed on Mt Baker at other times. The final portion of the film depicts skiing on Table Mountain and around the Mt Baker ski area. There is a short break, then some footage of skiing on Ruth Mountain and around Hannegan Pass, probably in 1938 with Sigurd Hall. Two skiers are shown skiing on Ruth. After another break, the film concludes with summer footage near Table Mountain and the Mt Baker ski area. Based on the Watson interview tape at the University of Washington, I believe the Olympic Mountain footage is with Andy Hennig and Ernst Kassowitz, probably June 10, 1939. The film opens with a wonderful scene of an old automobile, loaded with skis, driving onto a ferry across Puget Sound. There are scenes of the skiers on the ferry, near a lake on the Olympic Penninsula, and hiking toward the high country. The ski footage was filmed above Olympic Hot Springs in the area between Appleton Pass and the High Divide. There are fine scenes of Mt Olympus and the Bailey Range. The film ends with a scene of Watson's companions lounging on a ridge. Note that this film was originally combined with the Mt Baker Traverse, but I separated it onto a separate reel.

I've been over there a few times now and every time is just as good as the first...the area is just breathtaking. But hey, I don't expect you to take my word for it, come out and see for yourself. :-) Here are some photos from my trip out there with a best buddy, Nathan Dewey. The first is on our way up to Hurricane Ridge which, during the summer months, is in full bloom and covered for miles with wild flowers. It's pretty heavily visited which these very tame deer made obvious. This picture was taken from the passenger window of the Jetta and they weren't standing but a few feet off the road. Oh yeah, and all these photos were scanned at high resolution so you can click them to get the larger higher resolution version. After driving up to Hurricane Ridge we had a jolly good time driving the Jetta back down that mountain road. :-) The Jetta was right at home, zipping around tight turns and just plain enjoying the trip. Nathan and I had a pretty good time too. From there we drove to our evening destination, Olympic Hot Springs. We hiked a couple miles into the campsite, set up and camp and then set out to find these springs I had read about.

In the basement of the Museum we could have a bowling alley from the 1800's where the pins have to be set by hand, and right next to it have a modern bowling alley that is fully automated. Our visitors can go bowling either way. Consider the possibilities for each and every sport this means a lot of space is needed.
