Extractions: Chamonix, France Site of the First Winter Games By Susan Thomas Chamonix (pronounced Sham-oh-nee) is a quaint little town with the language and food of France, and the beauty and class of Switzerland. It was here that the early Olympic organizers decided to hold the very first Winter Games. An ice rink in the shadow of 15,000-foot Mont Blanc provided the setting for skating. A snow made bobsled run, which no longer exists, ran from part way up the mountain and into the town. And the skiing of course took place on the slopes where skiers flock every winter, 74 years later. At the time of the first Winter Games, a train moved people about half way up the mountain to the glacier, Mer de Glace. The train has been upgraded and it is still there for sightseeing. The Mer de Glace is an impressive, immense glacier that runs down the flanks of Mont Blanc almost touching the town of Chamonix. The glacier reaches down into the valley like a crooked old finger made of old snow and blue ice. It wasn't until 1955, 3 decades after those first games, that the Telepherique (tram) de l'Aiguille Du Midi (that's the high peak at the top, translated as the Needle of Noon) carried locals and tourists all the way to the top of the Mer de Glace. Now, that tram lures people from all over the world to Chamonix.

Another legend says that Zeus had instated the festival after his defeat of Cronus . According to yet another legend, King Iphitos of Elidos consulted the Pythia (oracle of Delphi ) to try and save his people from war in the 9th century BC . The prophetess advised him to organise games in honour of the gods. The Spartan adversary of Ipitos then decided to stop the war during these games, which were called Olympic, after

Extractions: SKI RACING History and Description Water ski athletes who feel the need for speed participate in water ski racing competitions. The roots of ski racing are planted firmly in California and Arizona. Although most participants compete at speeds between 35 and 70 miles per hour, elite athletes compete at extreme speeds of up to 100 miles per hour! Ski racing athletes compete in two types of races. In a marathon race, athletes travel from point A to B in an all-out dash for the finish line. Circle races are timed events in an oval course. Protective headgear and flotation devices are worn by athletes, drivers and observers. Competitors also wear neck braces and other protective survival gear to soften the blow of becoming a human crash-test dummy when falling at such high speeds. The National Water Ski Racing Association (NWSRA) was formed 41 years ago in Southern California when a handful of water skiing daredevils got together and began water ski racing events. The organization joined USA Water Ski as a sport division in 1991 and now has more than 600 members. In the late 1940s, several water ski and boat clubs in Southern California, bored with competing against each other, began challenging other clubs to friendly water ski and boat races. Today, the inter-club rivalry has evolved to include competitive events between participants from Oregon to the Mexican border, as well as in the states of Nevada and Arizona.

Extractions: A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHOW SKIING Extremely popular in the upper Midwest, and practiced throughout the nation, show skiing combines components of all water ski disciplines. Water ski shows are an aquatic Broadway musical, featuring several water ski acts choreographed to music and built around a theme that tells a story. Unique to show skiing are ballet/swivel skiing, adagio doubles, freestyle jumping and human pyramids. Ski show exhibitions or shows involve amateur clubs which usually have 30 or more members. Some clubs even have more than 200 members! Age is not a factor since ski club performers can range from children to grandparents. Show skiing is a rich part of the sport's history. Water skiers have been performing amateur and professional ski shows since the 1940s. In fact, in the 1950s, the most talented traditional competitors also were ski show professionals. Today, many of the most talented show ski athletes perform at aquatic theme parks such as the Wisconsin Dells, Marine World, Sea World and Cypress Gardens. Show Skiing has been Around for More than 60 Years No one knows what Ralph Samuelson, the acknowledged father of water skiing, hoped to accomplish when he created the sport in 1922, but it was soon apparent that one thing he wanted to do was put on a "show" for his neighbors on the Minnesota lake where he lived. Samuelsons first pull on skis was behind a motor boat, but he quickly created a new act (one not done today) by skiing behind an airplane on floats! The development of water skiing as a form of entertainment can be traced to this theatrical beginning.

Many different types of skiing are popular, especially in colder climes, and many types of competitive skiing events are recognized by the International Olympic Committee and other sporting organizations. However, aside from people in Scandinavia , skiing is recreational downhill skiing in which one visits a ski resort , purchases a lift ticket, dons cold-weather clothing, skis, ski boots and ski poles, and embarks on a chairlift gondola lift , or other mechanical method of uphill propulsion. Upon reaching the summit, the skier disembarks from the ski lift and travels downhill, propelled by gravity . One should not attempt this, unless one has been to ski school and learned how to turn and stop safely. Otherwise one's speed is likely to become excessive, uncontrollable, and attenuated only by stationary objects such as
