In addition, I revised the course handbook for RS/SC 320 (Range and Forage Management) and distributed it through a local copy service to the 105 students who were enrolled in the class Spring Semester. I was also able to help a graduate student initiate a greenhouse study utilizing the ARS facilities, and submitted two refereed articles for publication. Finally, I wrote and submitted a grant to the USDA Forest Service to support ongoing research in riparian ecology. This grant was funded fall, 1999. Ann Clark, Plant Agriculture, University of Guelph, Guelph, ON N1G 2W1 eaclark@uoguelph.ca Farming in the near future will operate under societal expectations and regulations which differ from those which shaped and guided decision-making by previous generations of farmers and researchers. Indeed, in the future and even today in some quarters, What? Sound environmental management will be at the center of agriculture in the future for at least two very different but convergent reasons. From the producers' perspective , agriculture is no longer sufficiently profitable to serve as a significant source of net income for most farm families. It will be argued below that a primary reason for the low profitability of high yield agriculture - as currently practiced - is dependence upon increasingly costly purchased inputs, such as fertilizer, biocides, and confinement feeding systems.

Your windmills along with a few modifications that a qualified biologist can make to a pond are the most cost effective methods to deal with algae. Basically, all those sites where people are selling commercial bacteria and barley straw are useless. There are SO many people in that small pond business who have no idea what they are doing. I mean nearly ALL of them have no clue - EVEN the ones who are the known “experts”! Just tell your customers to Aerate the water first and Windmills are THE way to go in our climate of rising energy costs. Also tell them they are inviting another set of problems in the form of rooted aquatic vegetation if they clear their water in most ponds. In this edition the scope of the bibliography has been expanded to include literature on hyporheic zone and floodplain/stream channel interactions. Previous editions included buffer strip research, since these studies seemed easily transferable. Each citation, with the exception of student theses, has been obtained, studied for content, and cross-indexed for other relevant citations. Only publications which were readily obtained through a research library system were included. Publications on tidally-influenced wetlands and exclusively lake riparian zones were excluded. All citations except for those of student theses have brief annotations to help identify the aspects of these studies, which are particularly relevant. Extractions: Summer rainfall may provide for a flexible fallow-crop strategy that maximises soil-water benefits for crops and minimise adverse environmental impacts in the Victorian Mallee. KEY WORDS Short-fallow, long-fallow, semi-arid, soil water, summer rainfall, fallow efficiency. A flexible crop strategy is advocated for cropping enterprises in the Great Plains Canada and USA (1). The region is semi-arid and subject to dryland salinity. The decision to fallow is based on profile soil water at sowing. A similar situation arises in the Victorian Mallee where long-fallows are commonly used to supplement in-crop rainfall. Stubble and volunteer weeds dominate the first 9 months of the long-fallow after harvest after which weeds are actively controlled (tillage/herbicide) prior to sowing. Stubble and volunteer weeds dominate in the summer period prior to seedbed preparation in the short fallows between crops. Environmental (wind erosion and dryland salinity: 3, 6) and economic (sacrificed crop) penalties attributable to long fallow necessitate measures to balance soil-water benefits and environmental impacts.
