Extractions: Water Quality - Adelaide and Encounter Bay Beaches Adelaide's metropolitan beaches are widely recognised as some of the safest beaches in Australia, due largely to their protected Gulf waters and shallow slopes. Similarly the beaches of Encounter Bay are some of the most popular outside of the metropolitan area for their surf beaches and protected waters for swimming. The EPA monitors water quality along the beaches to identify any problems that may affect the health of bathers and marine life. By doing this we can identify possible problems and make sure that the water quality remains good in the future. During and after storm events pollution may be washed down into drains, and then flow into creeks and rivers. This pollution can then be washed out into the sea and the water in which we swim. Other pollution may come from overflows from sewers or from accidental spills. It is generally a good idea to avoid swimming near creek and river outlets or stormwater drains when they are flowing after storms.

Extractions: River water quality monitoring in Northern Ireland (NI) is carried out by the Water Management Unit (WMU) of Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) in order to manage the aquatic environment in a sustainable manner. EHS is committed to chemical and biological monitoring of all significant waterways in NI in line with national and international classification schemes and agreements. Chemical monitoring of rivers in NI was carried out prior to 1970, but it was only in the early 1970s that a co-ordinated programme of routine chemical monitoring evolved. From 1990, chemical monitoring of rivers has been complemented by biological monitoring. The monitored network grew over the years until, by the late 1990s, around 2,400 km of waterways were included.

Extractions: Water pollution from many sources, including Agriculture can impose economic costs on farmers, other industries, and the public, as well as cause negative environmental effects on all plants and animals. Water resources should be used in the agri-food system in ways which balance economic and ecological needs. The link between farming and the quality of surface and groundwater has long been recognized, and is now a key environmental and health issue. Agricultural inputs such as fertilizer, livestock manure and pesticides may cause water contamination when improperly disposed of, stored or applied. High concentrations of organic matter, phosphorus and nitrogen in surface water can lead to its eutrophication and deoxygenation, which in turn destroy aquatic habitat and produce taste, odour and aesthetic problems. Intensive agriculture in areas of high soil permeability and high water tables may cause groundwater contamination from the percolation of chemicals and nutrients through the soil profile. There is also concern for negative health effects in areas where certain bacterial or nitrate concentrations exceed drinking water guidelines in surface or groundwater. As agriculture requires access to reliable supplies of high quality water for irrigation, livestock watering, and processing, it is in the sector's interest to reduce impacts on water quality. Biotechnology can enhance agriculture through management practices that reduce agricultural byproducts such as pesticides and nutrients into water courses. A goal area within the department's new
