The intense sunlight of spring is absorbed in the water column, which also heats up as the average daily temperature of the air increases. In the absence of wind, a temperature profile with depth might be expected to resemble Figure 2 (see the Light section ), decreasing exponentially with depth. However, density , another physical characteristic of water, plays an important role in modifying this pattern. Figure 3 Spring turnover . After this spring turnover , the surface water continues to absorb heat and warms. As the temperature rises, the water becomes lighter than the water below. For a while winds may still mix the lake from bottom to top, but eventually the upper water becomes too warm and too buoyant to mix completely with the denser deeper water. As Figure 3 suggests, the relatively large differences in density at higher temperatures are very effective at preventing mixing. It simply takes too much energy to mix the water any deeper. It is useful to visualize a more extreme example of density stratification . Imagine a bottle of salad dressing containing vegetable oil and vinegar. The oil is lighter (more buoyant) than the vinegar which is mostly water. When you shake it up you are supplying the energy to overcome the buoyant force, so the two fluids can be uniformly mixed together. However, if allowed to stand undisturbed, the more buoyant (less dense) oil will float to the top and a two-layer system will develop.

Conserve Water Resources and the Ecology With a total area of 36,000 sq. km, Taiwan has 17,000 sq. km of high mountains covered by forests; 9,000 sq. km of alluvial plains where most people dwell and work; nearly 10,000 hectares of foothills as a transition zone between human habitation and primeval nature. Furthermore, Taiwan has 1,500 km of beautiful shorelines and the adjacent wetland, with more than 130 rivers, bringing vitality between sea and land. However, Taiwan faces natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tropical torrential rainstorms, and typhoons. Rivers are short and steep, and the tremendous water flows of torrential rains weaken riverbanks. Floods carrying large amount of sand and mud often cause disasters. The mean annual rainfall in the Taiwan area is 2,500 mm, above world mean, but the distribution of rainfall is uneven, with seventy-eight percent falling between May and October. Nearly eighty percent of the more than 90 billion cubic meters of rainfall each year flows into the sea or evaporates. Available water from rivers is only 18 percent of the total rainfall.

Extractions: Research Background - Jellyfish are highly efficient competitors and voracious predators. When numerous, these gelatinous animals can change the integrity of plankton communities. In addition, swarms of soft-bodied zooplankton are known to fowl fishing trawls, damage salmon farming, and clog seawater inlets of electrical power stations. There is a growing awareness that invasions of soft-bodied zooplankton can be as ecologically damaging as oil spills. For example, the collapse of the Black Sea fisheries, worth 250 million USD per year, has been directly attributed to a shallow-water ctenophore, Mnemiopsis leidyi . This comb jelly was introduced into the Black Sea from ballast water about a decade ago and has constituted up to 95% of the zooplankton biomass in that biotope. The degree to which gelatinous zooplankton can be regulatory components of marine food webs is difficult to assess. Their bodies are fragile and easily damaged by traditional sampling with plankton nets. Consequently, reports on their natural history as well as quantitative accounts of the abundance, feeding, and metabolism of these animals are rare, especially for mesopelagic species. The application of submersible technology in deep water environments provides opportunities to optimize where, when, and how to conduct critical ecological studies. With regard to midwater gelatinous species, this in situ approach to field work provides unambiguous information about their distribution and behavior in relation to physical and chemical variables. Such data serve as a basis for conducting meaningful experiments in the natural environment. Alternatively, undersea vehicles can be used to collect delicate individuals for investigations in shipboard and shore-based laboratories.
