Technology ECOLOGY TEAM PROJECT The quality of the water in the Cooper River was tested by the Ecology Team. The Team also conducted a species survey, sampling and listing all the plants and animals that live in and around the Cooper River. Here are the students working on their samples and below are some of their findings. The following tables are a collection of data compiled by the Camden High and Cherry Hill West students on the Cooper River. The first table was collected in April of 1997, the second table was collected in April of 1998. The following water factors were tested: Lat. Long.- This is the latitude and longitude reading of the test sites. pH- Measure of the acidity, 7 is normal. Dis.O2-Measure of the dissolved oxygen in the water. CO2- Measure of the dissolved carbon dioxide in the water. Temp. Air- The average air temperature at the test site. Alkalinity-Measure of the basic nature of the water (opposite of acidity). Sulfides- Measure of decay micro-organisms in the water.

    Extractions: Members of the Junior Academy visited pond and creek research sites at Tyson, where they collected, identified and compared aquatic organisms. JA members used water test kits to measure a variety of environmental factors and observed adaptations in different forms of water flora and fauna which enable them to survive in different types of water habitat. The major goal of the Tyson Research Center is to return the native flora and fauna of the area to the state that existed at the time of the first European settlers. Native areas are fast disappearing throughout the United States as in other parts of the world. The loss of natural habitat and displacement of native species often adversely effects the ecology of an area and may contribute to change in micro-climate and other weather related factors.

    Extractions: 'Freshwater Ecology' is a final year undergraduate research-based subject offered by the Department of Environmental Sciences at UTS. The programme targets one geographical area of study each year, where research information from a number of research groups and community stakeholders can come together to improve environmental awareness and identify issues for attention. Often the results of the research form a basis for remedial works, such as stream and wetland restoration, flora and fauna protection, catchment improvement such as soil erosion reduction, control of exotic species, reduction of pathogenic micro-organisms, re-forestation, and general community education. The students engage in current, topical, environmental conservation issues and this requires close contact with the wider community. This objective is quite unique in university undergraduate science because it goes beyond the development of good scientists, towards a broader conservation thrust for the preservation and restoration of the natural environment outside the classroom. There is a focus on education for the environment as well as about the environment. Community participation is paramount in the process because all research topics come directly from local residents and institutional representatives (see list of community suggestions). Thus another aim of the UTS subject 'Freshwater Ecology' is to gain "street credibility" for the work that is undertaken by researching topics that are supplied by the community.

This course will explore the importance of water in the natural and unnatural environments. This course consists of three independent yet related trimester courses. Daily Responsibilities. Students must come to class on time and need to bring a pen or pencil and a single subject, 70 to 100 page notebook which is dedicated only to this class. All handouts will have three holes punched into them, so it is strongly suggested that each student get a three ring binder. Team Responsibilities. Students will form teams of three or four students which will be formed partially by choice and partially by random. Each team will work together on certain items for the entire trimester, including in-class activities, field work, and labs. All participation assignments and presentations will be done and graded as one group. All teams will name themselves after an animal or plant that can be found in the Minnesota River Valley. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the chair will evaluate the impact of watershed management activities, water supply operations, and changes in the food chain. Initial study sites are Victoria, Vancouver and the Cranbrook-Kimberley area, with plans to include other water utilities in the future. Cash funding for the chair totals more than $2.5 million over five years. Half will come from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and half from nine partners: the CRD Water Department in Victoria; AXYS Environmental Group in Sidney; Galloway Lumber Co. and Crestbrook Forest Industries in Cranbrook/Kimberley; Forest Technology Systems Inc. in Victoria; Isomass Scientific Inc. in Calgary, Focal Technologies Inc. in Nova Scotia; the B.C. Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks; and Forest Renewal B.C. (Kootenay region).
