Contact CORE CORE is the Washington, D.C. based association of U.S. oceanographic research institutions, universities, laboratories, and aquaria. Our 77 members represent the nucleus of U.S. research and education about the ocean. The National Oceanographic Partnership Program is a cooperative effort between 15 federal agencies, academia and private industry to coordinate national oceanographic research and education programs. Since it was established in 1997, the consortium has awarded nearly $80 million to more than 50 research and educational projects in ocean science. Today there is no system to study the long-term physical, chemical and biological changes that take place within the ocean. The Ocean Research Interactive Observatory Networks (ORION) program is an NSF-sponsored effort to develop a network of seafloor observatories that can conduct the first real-time studies of these critical processes. The National Ocean Science Bowl is a nationwide competition developed in 1998 to promote interest in ocean sciences. In 2003, an estimated 2,000 students and teachers representing 375 high schools will compete at 24 regional sites. Winners have toured and participated in oceanographic projects in the United States and England.

The report includes data on enrollment, student achievement, and other indicators of the state of American education. Key findings relating to private education include the following: Between 1993 and 2003, the share of students attending private schools increased 0.9 percentage points for faith-based schools and 0.8 percentage points for other private schools (p. 74). "Private school graduates were more likely than public school graduates to have completed advanced courses in science and mathematics" (p. 71). Private school sophomores have higher-than-average postsecondary expectations for themselves (p. 137). Private school students score above average in reading (p. 120), writing (p. 124) and math (p. 128).
