Extractions: Two preschools offer an alternative by Jayson Sargent The Northeast Kingdom has two alternative preschools: a Waldorf school and a Montessori school. Michelle Wildflower operates a Montessori School from her home in Westmore, taking children ages three to six. She began the school last fall and now has seven students. Montessori is a method that grew out of a social movement that took place in Italy in the early part of the twentieth century. Led by Maria Montessori (1870-1952), Italy's first female doctor, the movement pressed for economic justice for children and families and a better, more personal education system. The first Montessori school was founded in 1907. "She had such phenomenal results with her first school, which was for poor, disadvantaged kids from the slums of Rome, that she wondered what results she might have with regular kids," said Ms. Wildflower. What happened next revolutionized education in Italy. There are now over 4,000 Montessori schools in Europe. One of Montessori's tenets is that children learn through movement, Ms. Wildflower said. Children need to touch and move in order to learn, and to have free access to many stimulating endeavors which they can choose from however and whenever they please. In the Montessori method, the environment is tightly controlled. There are play stations that teach different facts and sciences through puzzles, maps and games. But no attempt is made to control the children's activities. This system is called a "prepared environment," said Ms. Wildflower. "It's not abandonment, though. The children use the materials in the way they are intended to be used." That is where adult guidance comes in.

Extractions: Waldorf schools seek to cultivate positive human values of compassion, reverence for life, respect, cooperation, love of nature, interest in the world, and social conscience, as well as to develop cognitive, artistic and practical skills. The soul life of the child is affirmed and nourished as the ground for healthy, active thinking. Because of this, Waldorf schools sometimes are mistakenly perceived as religious, or, in particular, as Christian schools. Nevertheless, parents of various religious views and ethical philosophies-Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, Protestants, Sufis, Muslims, eclectic seekers, and agnostics-choose Waldorf Education for their children. They do so knowing that Waldorf schools are based on a spiritual view of the human being and of the world. However, no religion, including Christianity, is promulgated in a Waldorf school. The fundamental tone of this worldview-which is not a religion-is in harmony with many world religions and philosophies. It stands in opposition, however, to the powerful, contemporary cultural currents based on materialism. In our culture a form of psychological conditioning occurs on an unprecedented scale through the cumulative impact of the 20,000 commercials that the average American child sees each year. Unchallenged assumptions about human nature convey reductionist views of the human being. These strongly influence how children form their fundamental "image of Self," their view of the essential nature of the human being. This is distinct from the individualized self-image each child also forms.

"When a child comes into this world, he is exposed to things from which we must protect him through our teaching. Otherwise he would flow too actively into the world. A person always has the tendency to become weak and stunted in soul, to make his limbs rachitic, to become a gnome. And in teaching and educating him, we work at forming him." We sense this formative activity best if we observe the child making a drawing, then we smooth it out a bit so that the result is not what the child wants and not what we want either, but the result of both. If I can do this, improve what the child scribbles with his fingers, in merging my feelings that I must protect from the child from being absorbed too strongly by the outer world. We must see that he grows slowly into the outer world and not let him do it too rapidly. We constantly hold a protecting hand over the child."

Extractions: June 15, 2002 I would have to assume that you are referring to a younger child writing, correct? In looking at this from that standpoint you need to go back to Steiner's beliefs and views about form drawing. Form drawing is the basis for for the development of fine motor skills as a preparation for writing. Remember, the movement of the hand also educates the brain. From the book Form Drawing Grades One through Four: "It is part of the evolution of art and, as such, develops the aesthetic sense and a feeling for form. It also teaches thinking but not in a non-intellectual way; it trains the intelligence to be flexible, able to follow and understand a complicated line of thought." A child experiences the forms and this develops the will forces. It is a way of "seeing" with the hands. Rudolf Steiner said "the line is the subject and not a picture of something in the outer world". This is also why when form drawing you should not allow the child to color in between the forms and lines. Children in Waldorf schools learn very significantly through the arts. In looking at work for the first grade, following Steiner's indications, we would begin with two lines: the straight and the curved. The first year is the year when the child gains uprightness - so in this posture the child actually "draws" this form with her upright body. So you see it's not just about drawing a line or letters or writing words... the reasons Steiner set forth for his specific methods of teaching go much deeper and as a Waldorf home educator you really do need to do the homework to understand completely what is going on. You must have a real understanding of coordination, movement, senses... the human ego and will forces and the soul force. Waldorf is about willing, thinking, feeling and all of this is going on in your child at all times!

A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal reflections on the gentle art of learning by Karen Andreola Charlotte Mason Research and Supply Company Many families who want to offer a liberal arts education to their children, including lessons in Greek and Latin, as well as formal instruction in logic, opt for the Classical Education approach. This method is based on the Trivium, an educational philosophy used in ancient Greece and Rome. Education is divided into three stages, Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric. Grammar (grades 1-6) is at the heart of the Grammar stage, as well as memorization of facts, figures, and basic skills. The Dialectic stage (grades 7-9) deal with logic, or understanding the why and how behind all the facts they learned in the grammar stage. The final stage, Rhetoric (grades 10-12+) focuses on reasoning and applied logic, explaining and using this learned knowledge to create new ideas and also applying them to real and hypothetical life situations.

Morehead A group of concerned parents carried signs of protest as they picketed Oak Ridge Elementary School in Sacramento, California. Their critics described them as misguided and in opposition to an "acclaimed curriculum" ("Waldorf Hysteria," Sacramento News and Review, June 12, 1997, p. 13). The parents, and representatives from the secular group, People for Legal and Non-Sectarian Schools (PLANS), claimed the school's use of the controversial Waldorf curriculum brought religion into the public school classroom. The disagreement intensified in July of this year, when the Sacramento City schools chief recommended that the Waldorf program remain at the school, and school board trustees voted unanimously to endorse the methodology ("Schools Chief Favors Waldorf," The Sacramento Bee , July 2, 1997, B1). This caused PLANS to begin preparation for a lawsuit against the school district. (TruthQuest Institute is finalizing a Brief of Amici Curiae (Friend of the Court) to accompany the lawsuit.)

Publicly Funded Waldorf Programs Violate the First Amendment in the United States Waldorf schools are an activity of Anthroposophy, a cult-like religious sect following the occult teachings of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). A huge amount of literature about Waldorf education has been produced within the closed system of Anthroposophy. Much of the available information fails to describe the spiritual mission of the Waldorf school system honestly. We have found that even experienced parents of Waldorf students usually know little about the Anthroposophical principles that determine the teaching methods and the Anthroposophical doctrine that permeates the curriculum. return to top Waldorf education has never been examined critically to determine whether it lives up to its claims. Waldorf's two-year teacher training program is woefully inadequate. The first "foundation" year is an Anthroposophical seminary program, consisting mostly of the study of Rudolf Steiner's occult philosophy and leading the teacher on Steiner's path to "initiation" as described in his book "Knowledge of Higher Worlds and its Attainment." Teacher trainees also must read Steiner's "Reincarnation and Karma" and "Occult Science." As the Waldorf movement grows, there is a growing need for evaluation from outside the Steiner religious movement, which is viewed by some as a cult. Parents and school boards should be aware that the representations of Waldorf promoters are often deceptive. For example, promoters will say that Waldorf is based on child development, but Steiner's theory of child development, based on reincarnation, karma, and "the etheric body," "the astral body," and "the I" differs significantly from the consensus of child development specialists. Waldorf theory leads to some questionable practices, especially in the teaching of reading, which Waldorf educators believe will damage children if even the alphabet is introduced before the "change of teeth"; the teaching of science; and in the treatment of learning disabilities, which are believed to be a child's karma.

Extractions: Since 1990, the world has seen remarkable advances in technology. Technology can be destructive, but it can also be extremely constructive. As parents, we have three basic choices (or a combination of them): raise our kids with little or no modern technology, raise our kids using all technology available, or raise our kids using technology selectively. Let me give you some examples of each. Many parents are deliberately choosing to raise their children without technology. These are the people who refuse to allow a television in their home, insist that their children only play with all-natural toys, and subscribe to organic approaches to learning such as the Waldorf method of education. This is certainly a valid philosophical choice, and one that is apt to produce a thoughtful, gentle, and capable citizen. As parents, however, we need to remember not to dominate the lives of our children. We need to allow them to explore the world around them. To do this, we need to orchestrate their world; to set up their environment in a way that allows them every possible opportunity to develop their brains and to explore their world productively. Children will play with virtually anything we give them. If we only provide them with toys having educational value, they will learn to love and value education naturally. Technology is, in fact, changing the average intelligence of Americans. In the seventies, it was well-known that the average I.Q. of Americans was 100. Largely due to technology, it is now known that this average I.Q. has increased. In other words, the average I.Q. of American children may well now be 110. As parents, we can use this information to our advantage.
