Extractions: Books by William R. Stanek Response from readers has been phenomenal. If you visit some of the major bookstores on-line, you'll find an awful lot of praise for my books. Check out the reader reviews at Amazon.Com or the ongoing chat in the Barnes and Noble online discussion area if you care to. I don't pretend to understand what the fuss is all about but a reader who recently read an article I wrote for PC Magazine on CORBA/IIOP and distributed computing summed it up pretty well by saying "Reading your article was an eye-opening experience. You managed to introduce the whole of [distributed computing] in lucid detail. I've attempted to read entire books on the subject and this same material would have filled several chapters yet you did what they couldn't with only a few pages. You've got a new fan." My only hope is that readers continue to enjoy my work and let me know from time to time how my books and articles help them get ahead. Extractions: Along the way of life, somehow I got into some book writing. Actually, I got into many different forms of writing - including writing standards work and code (OK, strictly not technically writing, but it is a form of art). This has been a long slow process over time slowly graduating to bigger and better things. Presented here is the summaries of all the books that I've worked on from the most recent to the earliest. As you can see, the list is starting to get to a reasonable length. This creates a fair amount of email that is time consuming to answer particularly as a lot of the questions are technical in nature. When this gets to 20 or so emails a day, things start to get into problems. I don't get a chance to answer everything particularly as I am also involved in higher priority work such as standards development. If sending me a question, can you please make it as short as possible. If its quick and I can dump out a 30 second reply, you are much more likely to get a response from me than one that says "why doesn't my code work?". Real Work Java 1.2 Networking
Justin Couch's Books web publishing Unleashed 2nd Ed. Chapter 39 Introduction to vrml Chapter 40 Creating vrml Worlds. Having finished the Laura Lemay http://www.vlc.com.au/~justin/books/web_pub.html
Extractions: Chapter 40: Creating VRML Worlds Having finished the Laura Lemay book, a number of quick fire chapters followed for the folks at Sams.net . By the time that these had started, the final VRML 2.0 specification was out and we were starting to get some reasonably complete browsers. Another in the Unleashed series from Sams.net. This time the chapters are devoted to introducing VRML itself to newbies. A very cut down intro of both the browsing/editing environments and the language itself, they provide a taster for people who really want to do something nifty with thier web pages. Like the rest of the Web Pub book, the general idea of these chapters was to get the user to purchase a dedicated VRML book if they were interested in knowing more about the topic. The difference with this book over the others, was that it was a "Professional Reference Edition" which basically meant it had a few hundred more pages, hardcover and dearer price tag. A number of extra topics - of which VRML was one - were introduced in brief in this edition. This means that in the standard series book you would not see my chapters. Since it was originally published, Sams have never got back to me to update the chapters. Since I live in Australia where we don't see as many of the titles as the US, I don't know whether the title even exists anymore.

Extractions: A Design Guide For 3D Pioneers By Deborah Weil While the magic of 3D virtual reality Web environments beckons seductively on the near horizon, the emerging technologies for creating these worlds are just thatnascent, unstable, and buggy. It's too soon to give you an easy recipe for incorporating VRML content into a Web site, but we have put together some useful tips and techniques, along with general guidelines from some VRML-savvy Web developers. Their comments illustrate the many possibilities for using VRML, from fun 3D demos (check out a VRML version of Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Memory" ) to renderings of engineering and product specifications to the creation of 3D cities. The level of sophistication and expertise required for executing such different VRML projects varies widely. But if you're willing to experiment with beta software, to do some hand-coding and tweaking, and to enter into the adventuresome spirit of contributing to the next generation of Web technology, you can create VRML content for your Web site today. The best way to get started as a VRML content creator is to take a good look at what's out there. It won't take you more than a day. As Paul Riddell, a VRML consultant and former Webmaster for Meridian (a Carrollton, TX-based Web construction company), puts it: "There are almost as many VRML browsers as there are VRML sites on the Web." In other words, there are as yet no more than several dozen sites incorporating sophisticated VRML content. Several lists will direct you to some of these (see

The increasing growth of 3D Sites on the World Wide Web has been fueled by the adoption of VRML, a cross-platform standard for transmitting and viewing 3D scenes over the Internet, and by the availability of software such as VHSB which greatly simplifies the creation of 3D Web sites. "Corel, as the leading graphics software provider for professional software developers, recognizes that 3D on the Web is growing very quickly," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "We feel it is crucial to give our customers the best possible tool for constructing their own 3D Internet Spaces, and think that ParaGraph's software is the leader in this respect."
