Extractions: There are two primary sorts of voodoo. Rada is a family spirit voodoo and the voodoo of the relatively peaceful and happy loa. Petro (in some areas called Congo) is a black magic voodoo and the voodoo of angry, mean and nasty loa or spirit. Dangerous things happen in petro including death curses and the making of zombies. Zombies are created by a black magician in voodoo, called a bokor who puts a poison on the skin of the victim. No one knows exactly what the components of the poison are, but it is thought to contain substances from various toxic animals and plants, including the gland secretions of the bouga toad, millipedes and tarantulas, the skins of poisonous tree frogs, seeds and leaves from poisonous plants, human remains (for effect), and four types of puffer fish, which contain tetrodotoxin, one of the most poisonous substances in the world. After administration, the victim becomes completely paralyzed and falls into a coma. A gris-gris can be a voodoo charm, spell or hex used to cause certain events to occur (good or bad); also used for protection from evil or to ensure good luck. Though most people think of sticking pins in the voodoo dolls to invoke some kind of curse on a person, many practitioners say the central aspect of voodoo is healing people from illness. It tells the story of Frank and Nancy, two bored Irish officemates, condemned to spend their lives in an office. This infinite film is an algorithmic sitcom inspired from Sartre's play "Huis clos", crossbred with an office life simulator. Two physical voodoo dolls, that represent the protagonists, can be manipulated in order to change the emotions of the characters in the film. It is a social laboratory where the viewers can experiment on the influence of emotions as initial conditions in any social interaction. As viewers get skilled manipulating the dolls, they can control the emotions of Frank and Nancy, and see what happens when : Frank is cranky and Nancy is hyperactive ? Frank is horny and Nancy is depressed ? The interactive film is made exclusively of real lens-based footage shot with real actors, but it runs on a real-time editing engine that fluidly assembles the film shot by shot as one watches it, while respecting the conventions of continuity editing.

Extractions: Anti-Haitian propaganda in the interests of western imperialism? Introduction In 1972, the Anthology Film Archives in New York received from Grove Press five cartons of film. They contained the footage that Maya Deren had shot while in Haiti but had been unable to edit before her death in 1961 (the film presented earlier was an edit made by Cherel and Teiji Ito in 1985). A rudimentary description of the contents reads as follows: "The entire set of Haitian reels is markedly similar and repetitious in content with few exceptions. For the most part the action involves Haitian people involved in Voudoun ritual and dancing. This includes mystical drawings made on the ground, the oft-repeated sacrifice of chickens or cocks and small goats, accompanied by seated drummers, There are several instances of apparent religious hysteria and about 400 feet of Mardi Gras parade." (quote from Anthology Film Archives, Linda Patton, 1972) The important words for the purposes of this presentation are 'apparent religious hysteria'. It expresses a paradox peculiar to ethnography when it attempts to represent an intimate subjective experience through an objectifying-authenticating mechanism like documentary cinema. It begs the question "what would footage of substantive religious hysteria look like"? It is also characteristic of classical ethnography to frame the religious experiences of non-western peoples within psycho-pathological categories peculiar to the west, such as hysteria. Deren was acutely aware of these complex cultural paradoxes and they may well have contributed to her difficulty in editing the Haiti footage. I will return to problems associated with representation, authenticity, the supernatural and mental illness throughout this presentation. In so doing I hope to show that just out-of-shot of Voodoo Terror the mental asylum looms large.
