Extractions: ISBN: Why the Book Was Written In the early 1970s, Bill Ganus and I developed an environmental geology course at San Diego State University. The growing awareness of the environment and the availability of good textbooks made it natural to offer a general education course looking at geological hazards, resource utilization and disposal, and intelligent planning in concert with the environment. The course had moderately successful enrollments, chugging along at 25 to 35 students per semester for over a decade. In 1987, Tom Rockwell and I were discussing the environmental geology course and speculating on why it never attracted large enrollments. We agreed that the natural disasters portions of the course were the most popular. So, I formally changed the name of the course to "Natural Disasters" but did not change the course description or textbook, or advertise the change in any way. Yet almost instantly, students reading through the fine print of semester course offerings saw the "Natural Disasters" listing and enrollments skyrocketed. Now we offer multiple sections with more than 4,500 classroom seats per academic year and still do not satisfy demand.

Extractions: Preface When the volcano Tambora erupted in Indonesia in 1815, as many as 100,000 people perished as a result of the blast and an ensuing famine caused by the destruction of rice fields on Sumbawa and neighboring islands. Gases and dust particles ejected into the atmosphere changed weather patterns around the world, resulting in the infamous ''year without a summer'' in North America, food riots in Europe, and a widespread cholera epidemic. And the gloomy weather inspired Mary Shelley to write the gothic novel Frankenstein From the prodigious eruption of Thera more than 3,600 years ago to the relative burp of Mount St. Helens in 1980, the results of volcanism attest to the enduring connections between geology and human destiny. Jelle Zeilinga de Boer is the Harold T. Stearns Professor of Earth Science at Wesleyan University. His publications include work on the geodynamic evolution of the Appalachians, Costa Rica, Greece, Panama, and the Philippines.

Then as you continue to circle have you felt the pressure mounting to decide whether or not to continue? Now is the time to reference the POH and find the correct checklist. If volcanoes are not covered in the Supplement Section you can pull out now to save face and just say, It wasnt in the book, so why risk it? Most people would nod their heads in consensus and agree wholeheartedly that you did the right thing. I mean, look at the risks. Did you even contemplate the risks? Shame on you for even considering such a thing. First of all, isnt there some kind of law preventing you from landing inside a volcano? I mean if there isnt one, there ought to be. And isnt the volcano inside a national park. That means it is protected. If you land there then you might be violating some kind of regulations. Plus, youd be out of radio contact with flight control. What if something happened? No, you had better not go at all.

Ask-a-Seismologist Tel: (868) 662-4659 The Earth's crust is made up of slabs of material called plates which move relative to each other. The process involved in this plate movement is called Plate Tectonics. Friction prevents the plates from moving smoothly past each other, consequently, energy accumulates until there is enough to overcome the restraining frictional force. An earthquake occurs when the plates jerk past each other, releasing stored energy. The Eastern Caribbean is an example of an island arc system formed at a convergent plate boundary (more specifically, at a subduction zone, where two tectonic plates meet and the denser plate is forced beneath the lighter plate). This is the main cause of the volcanic and seismic activity in the Eastern Caribbean. Most of the earthquakes occurring in the Eastern Caribbean are either tectonic or volcanic in origin. Tectonic earthquakes are generated when plates move as accumulated energy is released.

In correlation with Springfield School Dist. 186s Project Lincoln, I modified the Language Arts for the third grade level. I have created an overview of the six Language Arts themes, and made curriculum grids for each. Each of these themes has a Unit of Practice that incorporates technology and embraces several educational reforms that we have learned about this summer. Almost everyday someone on TV, the radio, or in print condemns eating at Fast Food Restaurants. None-the-less, Americans visit them three to five times a week. It is time to go armed with the knowledge of the six food groups and recognize through the sixth one where all of the fats, oils, and sweets are. Not only will you eat better, but also you will feel better. Students will learn about the food groups and junk food. Using our math skills and some easy graphing, let us find out about our favorite foods.

Extractions: Rotorua, Taupo and much of the central North Island lie in an area geologists call the Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is a very distinctive area of mountains, lakes and a landscape that everywhere bears the trace of volcanic activity. Gerald Cubitt and Les Molloy, the authors of "Wild New Zealand", have the following to say about the area: "The Taupo Volcanic Zone can be thought of as a southern terminus of the great Pacific Ring of Fire which extends down the western Pacific from the Tongan Islands through the Kermadec Islands to the Bay of Plenty. The Zone contains, in White Island and Tongariro National Park, some of the most continuously active volcanoes in the world." Within the Taupo Volcanic Zone there are 3 volcanoes still active: Ruapehu, Tongariro, and Ngarahoe (all are located in Tongariro National Park ). All three have erupted fairly often in the last few hundred years. Ruapehu and Ngarahoe are two of the most continuously active composite volcanoes in the world. Volcanic eruptions have been the cause of 2 very well known disasters in the last 150 years. The

Get prepared and be prepared! Each year devastating disasters ravage our nation, leaving behind countless victims. Pre-disaster planning can have a dramatic impact on minimizing the tragedy and suffering, resulting in a more efficient and coordinated (non panicked) response, and will save lives. Now is the time to prepare for these conditions. Do not wait until it is too late. And, do not be fooled into thinking that only other people are affected. Remember tornadoes, blizzards, floods, earthquakes, fires and biohazard material spills, can be due to a large number of different reasons, how well you plan, prepare and response to those situations will determine if you and your family will survive them.
