Beginning in sixth grade, students are assigned faculty advisors, have a fully departmentalized academic schedule, and have the opportunity to take advanced courses in math and Spanish. Homeroom The homeroom teacher for sixth grade is responsible for keeping track of attendance, collecting homework for all subjects, and distributing informational materials from the school. Students report to their homeroom first thing every morning, and return to that room at the end of each day before dismissal. Academics Four of the five academic courses (math, English, history, and science) are placed in an A/B morning schedule. The length of each course is one hour and 25 minutes, and it occurs every two days. Each middle school student, then, has two academic courses before lunch every day. This schedule enables students to have lengthy focused classes with homework in each without overloading students with homework. French and Spanish classes are 45 minutes each day right after lunch. Students also have a 45-minute study hall every day after lunch during which they prepare their homework. Advisors The main goal of the faculty advising system is to monitor closely the academic progress of every student. The faculty member serves as guide, mentor, friend, and advocate to groups of four or five students. The advisees meet as a group with their advisor over lunch once a week and also individually at least once a week, and the advisors meet weekly to discuss students. The advisor has the students schedules and is kept updated with progress in all classes, including sports and electives. While the teachers of those courses best answer questions about particular classes, general information about how your middle school student is doing would come from the faculty advisor.

The modified section of Spanish 1010 is designed for students who have difficulty learning a foreign language. It will be taught using methods recommended for students with this type of difficulty. This course will place even greater emphasis on listening and speaking than the other courses, and will introduce grammatical structures more slowly, more selectively, and with more opportunity to practice them. Despite the modified pace and curriculum, the course is demanding. Plan to dedicate to it at least two hours daily outside of class, and more time on weekends. You must meet with the course tutor once a week outside of class. Set up a regular schedule with the tutor, and keep it. The meetings are obligatory and absences will be recorded and counted when calculating your participation grade. Experience has shown that working regularly with the tutor can improve student grades and reinforce progress in the language. The tutor will help with specific difficulties you are having, or problem areas the instructor wants you to concentrate on. The tutor will also help with homework, quiz and exam preparations, and pronunciation. You may also use your time with the tutor to practice conversation and using the vocabulary and grammatical structures we learn in class.
