Good vocational training is one of the best ways to get the training needed for specialized jobs and to qualify for higher pay. However, vocational training can also be a disaster. Many individuals who have enrolled in vocational schools with high hopes have left the schools with large debts that they cannot repay and have not improved their ability to get a good job. Vocational schools cost money, and if a school does not provide training that will lead to a better job, the money is not well spent. The initial out-of-pocket cost of enrolling in a vocational school may seem small because schools often offer loans to cover most of the expense. The loans, however, may impose a crushing debt burden in the future. If you are considering vocational training, be sure to carefully research the school before you enroll or sign any papers. "There are just stunning patterns of sex segregation in schools across the country," said Jocelyn Samuels, vice president and director of educational opportunities for the law center. "The primary problems in career ed are inattention and lack of perception that there is a problem." The center's survey on vocational programs marks the 30th anniversary of the federal law Title IX of the Education Amendments that bars sex discrimination in schools and other educational programs receiving federal funds. That includes almost all public elementary and secondary schools and most colleges and universities.
