Suffer the Little Children: The carved inscription above the east entrance of the Middle School. Built in 1901: the cornerstone of the New Spirit Middle School building. The original part of the Primary School building was also built in 1901. A school is of course much more than a building, but, having said that, our buildings are pretty cool. They are old Catholic schools located next to the Rectory and church buildings of two Saint Paul churches. As a publicly-funded charter school, New Spirit has no affiliation with the church, but some traces remain, such as the carved inscription above the Middle School's east entrance. The Middle School was a parochial school that closed in the early 1970s. The building was used for many years for a Native American school called The Red School House. Some traces of this remain as well, notably some dramatic wall paintings in the staircase. This use ended in 1995 and the building, by now quite run down, stood unused. The building was purchased by a non-profit corporation which invested nearly $1.5 million in renovations and additions as part of a long-term lease to New Spirit School.

One such figure was James Solomon Russell, founder and first principal of the Saint Paul Normal and Industrial School. (The name of the school was spelled without an apostrophe "s" until the charter was changed in 1941.) The newly ordained deacon in the Protestant Episcopal Church arrived in Lawrenceville, in Brunswick County, Virginia, March 16, 1882. Here he found a small group of Negro communicants in St. Andrew's Church and organized them into a congregation. By February 1883, the first Saint Paul chapel had been constructed and was ready for occupancy. Immediately, a parochial school was organized in the vestry room of this small frame chapel. Soon these quarters of the parochial school became too small for the increasing enrollment, and a three-room frame structure was built with funds contributed by the Reverend James Saul of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On September 24, 1888, with fewer than a dozen students, the Saint Paul Normal and Industrial School was started in the building known as the Saul Building. More students came as word about the school traveled. The members increased to such an extent that the founder, The Reverend James Solomon Russell, realized the need for a program of expansion and development.
