The New River and the Kanawha combine to form the most important waterway entirely within the state. West Virginia's climate is generally of the humid continental type, with hot summers (except in the highest areas) and cool to cold winters. West Virginia's natural beauty is spectacular, and the excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing offered here form the basis of a growing tourist industry. The state has numerous state parks, public hunting areas, and state forests; Monongahela National Forest and a portion of George Washington National Forest (most of which is in Virginia) are in West Virginia. Mineral springs are scattered throughout the state, notably at the resorts of Berkeley Springs and White Sulphur Springs. Other tourist attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (see National Parks and Monuments , table) and various mounds built by ancient peoples, most notably Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, one of the nation's largest.

West Virginia was admitted as the 35th state into the Union in 1863, after conditions requiring the gradual emancipation of slaves had been met. Running southwestwardly across Tidewater are four great rivers-the lower Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James, the lower reaches of which form estuaries of Chesapeake Bay into which they empty. At the Fall Line, which runs north and south, cities-Alexandria, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Petersburg-arose about trading posts at the bead of navigation and on the mill sites at the falls. Piedmont - Piedmont, the largest of the geographical provinces, lies between the Fall Line and the Blue Ridge Mountains (q.v.), extending in width 40 mi. (64 km.) at the north and 185 mi. (298 km.) along the southern border. It is a relatively low, rolling plateau region cut by many streams.

Jim Fonseca, when he was a geography professor at George Mason University, before becoming Dean of the Ohio University-Zanesville campus, ended up with 9 regions that seemed to "fit together." Here's how he saw it after years of studying Virginia, in an article published in the Virginia Geographer (Fall-Winter, 1990 issue): The human geography of contemporary Virginia is the product of complex interaction between the state's physical environment and its human population. The diverse physiographic regions of the statethe Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Appalachian Plateauare important influences, but they are not the only factors explaining regional population distribution and economic activity in the Commonwealth. One of the more critical factors influencing Virginia's geography is the location of the state in reference to larger multistate regions, such as Megalopolis, Appalachia, and the Piedmont Manufacturing Belt. The boundaries of these regions are seldom sharply demarcated, either on the national or the Virginia landscape. However, a useful approximation of their spatial extent in Virginia can be obtained by analyzing the state's physical geography in terms of social and economic data for nine contemporary regions that are based on the boundaries of the state's
