North of the Chesapeake Bay, the coast consists of refuge areas, while south of the Bay is one of the Nation's largest coastal resorts, Virginia Beach. Periodic applications of sand are needed to maintain the quality of these beaches for the general public. Virginia Beach attracts 1.5 million tourists each year who spend over $300 million, providing local communities over $40 million in taxes annually. The loss of sand from Virginia's beaches is a problem affecting the coast and the Commonwealth's economy. We are working with the Commonwealth, through the

Extractions: @import url(../styles/base.css); The organization chart of state government shows the structure of the three branches. The governor has authority to make numerous appointments , and the Virginia Supreme Court has the authority to rule on the constitutionalty of a law. When push comes to shove, however, the General Assembly is the center of political power in Virginia ... even though most residents of the state could not name their elected representatives to the House of Delegates or the State Senate. The General Assembly is the oldest elected representative body in the United States in continuous operation. It replaced the House of Burgesses in 1776 (12 years before the Federal Congress was first elected in 1788 after adoption of the Constitution). The reconstructed House of Burgesses in Williamsburg is an incorrect architectural representation of the building's appearance in 1776, but still worth a visit. There, you can see the last page of the House of Burgesses' journal that someone wrote the final word concluding it's operation - Finis . That was done after colonial governor Lord Dunmore sought to block the rebellious House from continuing to meet. Members just adjourned to the local pub and created a new mechanism for representative government. There were 5 extralegal Virginia Conventions in 1775-76, before Virginia declared its independence and then adopted its first constitution, formally converting from a colony to a state and establishing the General Assembly as the replacement for the House of Burgesses and the Governor's Council.

Virginia Department Of Social Services Warner today appointed a task force to study the challenges facing virginias citiesand urban areas and to recommend actions that will make the state a more http://www.dss.state.va.us/printer/news/commish_chair.html
Extractions: April 29, 2003 RICHMOND Governor Mark R. Warner today appointed a task force to study the challenges facing Virginias cities and urban areas and to recommend actions that will make the state a more effective partner for urban areas seeking to rebuild and revitalize. A report from the Governors Urban Policy Task Force is due on September 30, 2003. "Graying populations, aging infrastructure and declining revenues present enormous challenges for many of our urban areas," Governor Warner said. "I expect this Task Force to produce a range of options that will help us forge an effective partnership with local governments to make our urban areas even better places to live and work." In general, cities in the Commonwealth have been unable to attain the economic prosperity and social vitality enjoyed by surrounding jurisdictions. Virginias urban areas have disproportionate concentrations of low income and other underserved residents, and significant limitations to new and rehabilitated economic development. The Governors Urban Policy Task Force will: Identify state laws, policies, regulations and funding formulas that contribute to the fiscal stress of core cities or inhibit their ability to attract business development or residents; deliver services effectively; or maintain an adequate quality of life;

Extractions: VIRGINIA BEACH The firefighters union said on Monday they have a study that shows heart attack victims in Norfolk are more than twice as likely to be alive by the time they get to a hospital than cardiac victims in Virginia Beach. City and state emergency medical services officials, however, criticized the study, calling it unscientific and flawed. The study, conducted by Norfolk Battalion Chief David B. Palmer for a graduate class in public administration, shows that for a one-year period between March 1998 and February 1999, 44 percent of heart attack victims transported by Norfolk EMS arrived at the hospital with a pulse and heartbeat. In Virginia Beach, 17 percent of heart attack victims transported by the volunteer rescue squad arrived at the hospital with a pulse and heartbeat. In Portsmouth, the only other city included in the study, 21 percent still had a pulse and heartbeat upon arrival at the hospital. The remaining patients in all three cities arrived at hospitals clinically dead. However, some still may have been revived in the emergency room.
