The Journal of Family Life began when a group of people in the Albany Free School community felt the need for a publication which would discuss issues of concern to families in the world that we all inhabit. We meet three times a week at 7.30 in the morning to create our journals before going on to the other busy tasks we have in life. It has been an exhilarating ride as we embark on the quest to find models of living that will help us all to seat ourselves back at the controls of our own lives. Our search is for the tools we need to be able to transform individual lives, and ultimately the entire community. We also examine the failure of our political, social and cultural institutions to meet the real needs of families. The New School of Northern Virginia is a small, holistic school that seeks to educate the whole child for the twenty-first century. The New School's student body is inclusive, co-educational, and reflective of the diversity and richness of the Northern Virginia community. Our school seeks students and families who support our philosophy, who feel that the school can make a significant contribution to their child's growth, and who can contribute to the life of the school.

Extractions: The Virginia Beach SPCA is the only shelter in South Hampton Roads, (home to almost one million residents) to accept every animal brought to us. Twenty percent of the animals we receive come from cities other than Virginia Beach. We are one of only two shelters in Virginia to spay or neuter every dog or cat before it leaves for its new home. We "fix" nearly 2,000 animals each year, including puppies and kittens at 8 weeks and older. Every animal we take in receives a full range of vaccines and a blood test. We investigate nearly 200 lost or found pet reports each week. At least eighty percent of the animals brought to the Virginia Beach SPCA are turned in by their owners. This does not include those animal owners who do not tell the truth about turning in their pets, nor does it include cats turned in by people who have fed the animal for a year but still do not claim ownership. Of the roughly 6,000 animals we receive each year, only 35% of the folks turning them in leave a contribution for the animals care, despite having signed a document explaining that we are not tax supported and that it costs us $35 per week to care for an animal.

Extractions: In Action July 2003- League in the Spotlight: LWV of Loudoun County, Virginia Registers Over 1,000 High School Students to Vote In her own words...Sheryl Wolfe, LWV of Loudoun County, VA. "In past years our voter registration drives in the local high schools were loosely coordinated and resulted in about 25% of eligible students registering. This year we decided to try and improve this effort to reach more students, to provide more meaningful information and to increase our registration numbers. From April 21-May 5 of this year, 21 members of the League of Women of Loudoun County, Virginia went into 86 government classes at the six public high schools and one alternative school to talk with 2109 seniors about the importance of voting, the ins and outs of voting and about the 2003 elections. We then assisted eligible students to register. Just barely under 50% of the students registered (49.88%) or 1052 students! The great thing about this event is that not only did we all feel GREAT about serving and encouraging these new voters but the League also got a tremendous amount of publicity AND it drew many members out of the wood work who had not ever volunteered or had become inactive!!! Every member who participated LOVED talking with the students and would do it again in a heartbeat!!! Also, 2 members of a neighboring League (LWV of the Fairfax Area, Virginia) volunteered to assist us when 2 of our members turned up sick.

Extractions: Source: ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Management Eugene OR. School Discipline. ERIC Digest, Number 78. THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC School discipline has two main goals: (1) ensure the safety of staff and students, and (2) create an environment conducive to learning. Serious student misconduct involving violent or criminal behavior defeats these goals and often makes headlines in the process. However, the commonest discipline problems involve noncriminal student behavior (Moles 1989). These less dramatic problems may not threaten personal safety, but they still negatively affect the learning environment. Disruptions interrupt lessons for all students, and disruptive students lose even more learning time. For example, Gottfredson and others (1989) calculate that in six middle schools in Charleston, South Carolina, students lost 7,932 instructional days44 years!to in-school and out-of-school suspensions in a single academic year. It is important to keep the ultimate goal in mind while working to improve school discipline. As education researcher Daniel Duke (1989) points out, "the goal of good behavior is necessary, but not sufficient to ensure academic growth." Effective school discipline strategies seek to encourage responsible behavior and to provide all students with a satisfying school experience as well as to discourage misconduct.
Alternative Education Thomas Jefferson Center for Educational Design/University of virginia. State Legislation on alternative schools for Disruptive Youth. http://hamfish.org/framework/frameworks/alted.html
Extractions: Email: hfi@hamfish.org A Comprehensive Framework Most violence in schools is committed by a small group of chronic offenders who are often also involved in the juvenile justice system. These youth have a number of special needs that are not necessarily shared by all the students in the school. If their violent behavior is not of a very serious nature, they can be pulled out of regular classes briefly to receive special services or receive those services after school. If they pose a serious risk to other students, school administrators are obligated to place them in completely separate settings to ensure the safety of other youth and to provide the intensive educational and social skills training that these students need. Normally, separating youth from their class peers is to be avoided, but the dangers that some students pose to other children require that exceptions be made. Any student who brings a gun to school must be expelled for 1 year, according to the Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994, with some exceptions as decided by the local chief educational administrator. Many States have passed additional legislation, and many schools have adopted policies that require suspension or expulsion of students who are disruptive or violent. These measures do protect students in school, but they do not protect the larger community or provide troubled youth with needed assistance.
