Developmental Therapeutics Oncology research at the College of Veterinary Medicine, is conducted by members of the Carcinogenesis and developmental Therapeutics Program (CDTP). The CDTP is a multidisciplinary program which foster collaboration between basic cancer researchers and clinical veterinary oncologists at the college. The CDTP interacts closely with the Cancer Center at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. There are currently three areas of major research emphasis: Top of Page Top of Page The transplacental carcinogenesis studies focus on the long-term effects of in utero exposure to carcinogens contained in tobacco products. These studies have shown that a single dose of a tobacco-specific carcinogen administered in the last trimester of pregnancy causes a high incidence of respiratory tract tumors in the offspring of hamsters at middle age. When the hamsters were additionally given ethanol in the drinking water during pregnancy, the offspring developed a high incidence of pancreatic ca ncer. These findings suggest that mothers who smoke and drink during pregnancy increase the risk of their children to develop cancer of the lungs and pancreas at the age of 40-50. In utero exposure to such carcinogenic stimuli may thus be an important f actor underlying the increasing cancer incidence observed in individuals of this age group.

Extractions: Home Services Research Informatics Understanding the biology of the domestic dog In a very short time, a complete DNA sequence of the dog will become available to academic researchers throughout the world. This resource, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health at a cost of almost $50 Million, renders obsolete all preceding genetic maps of the dog, and creates an entirely new opportunity to tie genes to diseases and traits. To fully leverage this emerging resource, the Center for Veterinary Genetics at the University of California School of Veterinary Medicine is calling for cheek swab samples from distinct populations of dogs with the express purpose of assembling a comprehensive genetic repository that represents all of 'dogdom'. While the current DNA bank adequately reflects the genetic legacy of more than 100 recognized breeds, an additional 400 international canine populations remain unrepresented. If you would like to have your dog represent its breed in this unique biological resource, please request a sample collection kit here: Request Form These kits are free, and include a postage-paid envelope for returning the sample to our laboratory at the Center for Veterinary Genetics. The collection protocol is simple and will take less than 5 minutes to perform.

Extractions: The Western College of Veterinary Medicine was established at the University of Saskatchewan in 1964 to service the veterinary training and research needs of the four western provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba). It is one of four veterinary colleges in Canada. The seven academic departments of the College have a staff complement of over 70 faculty members, many of whom are at the forefront of contemporary research and veterinary practice. In its short history, the College has quickly gained stature and credibility in the fields of animal reproduction, gastroenterology, toxicology and, more recently, molecular biotechnology. In particular, embryo freezing and transfer technologies in domestic cattle and large game animals together with the development of the Toxicology Research Centre have established an international reputation for excellence for the College. The Veterinary Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), also associated with the College, is further evidence of initiative within the faculty. Active research programs include wildlife pathology, the environment, poultry, locomotion (especially in horses), animal reproduction, epidemiology of disease and metabolic abnormalities in animals.

UW-Madison School Of Veterinary Medicine - Research is among the nation s top veterinary schools in research directed at supporting animal agriculture in Wisconsin is leader in food animal medicine programs, the http://www.vetmed.wisc.edu/research
Extractions: Home Research On the UW-Madison campus, the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital are strategically located between the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and the Medical School. The significance of this relationship is reflected in much of the research done at the School of Veterinary Medicine, research that frequently links concerns for animal health, human health and a healthy environment. Research done by Professor Ian Duncan on the myelin deficient dog called the "Shaking Pup" has led the veterinary neurologist and his research team to a possible treatment for Multiple Sclerosis and other human disorders. Wisconsin is among the nation's top veterinary schools in attracting research grants from the National Institutes of Health as well as other agencies. The School has achieved widespread recognition for the strength of its research programs, with faculty conducting both basic and clinically applied research on a diverse range of topics. Research directed at supporting animal agriculture in Wisconsin is a priority. Considered the nation's leader in food animal medicine programs, the School works in collaboration with CALS to help the state's farmers improve the health and productivity of their animals.
Extractions: Research Each department is equipped with research facilities. Additional research support is provided in the veterinary teaching hospitals, molecular biology laboratories, experimental animal section and through the university computer network. The major research aim is to develop efficient procedures in enharncement of animal management and production, animal-product hygiene, disease treatment, prevention, and zoonosis. Exploration of mechinism of fundamental importance to biomedical science is also of great interest Research funs are obtained from leading national research institutes, commercial companies and international funding sources. Notable research aspects in recent years include: Biotechnological improvements in animal production and health encompassing domestic animals, companion animals and aquatic animals. Development of novel anatomical teaching aid models from para-rubber Development of histochemistry of lectin in animal digestive tracts Improvements in the understanding of molecular neuroscience on the field of amyloid beta-peptide toxicity Bioavailability of predigested multi-grain feed concentrate in food animals and aquatic species.

LTSN-01:Linking Teaching And Research: Do We? Can We? Should We? research is important to the development of students more likely to consider doing research themselves which there is a shortage of researchers in medicine. http://www.ltsn-01.ac.uk/resources/features/linking_teaching_research
Extractions: @import url("styles.css"); /*IE and NN6x styles with layers*/ Claims have been made that linking teaching and research is important to the development of students and results in better learning. Some universities are founded on this idea; others are not. Is there any evidence that such linking does produce better students? Better doctors? Most studies have looked at whether lecturers ' research productivity and teaching effectiveness are correlated and, basically, come up with a zero correlation - some people are good at one or the other; some are good at both; some are probably bad at both. (See Hattie and Marsh, 1996, for a meta-analysis.) But perhaps this is the wrong question. We should be asking whether the students who are involved in, or at least encounter, research in the course of teaching are better prepared for whatever they go on to door get more out of their educational experience. It has been found that exposing students to research makes them more likely to consider doing research themselves which could be important in areas where there is a shortage of researchers in medicine. Also, many people have bemoaned students' lack of ability to critically analyse research papers, a skill they certainly would need to develop to understand research in which they are involved.
