Extractions: THE HISTORY OF VAUDEVILLE INTRODUCTION A Classic Vaudeville Poster WHAT IS VAUDEVILLE ? Vaudeville was THE most popular form of entertainment in America between 1875 and 1932. Before the invention of radio, movies and television, most theaters around the country presented vaudeville shows. Every place from big cities to small towns had its own vaudeville house, and performers would travel from one town to the next throughout the year. Vaudevillians were skilled in comedy, juggling, magic, clowning, acrobatics, singing, mime, music, and dancing. The performers themselves molded these skills into original acts, using music, costuming, dialogue, and their own personalities to enhance the presentation. The Three Keatons - "Buster" is the little one HOW DID THE WORD VAUDEVILLE ORIGINATE ? Vaudeville, like many forms of theatre, dance, and music, had its origins in Europe. The word VAUDEVILLE was originally derived from two French phrases: Val de Vire

Other Guides In 1993, when I first began to research theatre sites on the internet, it was a difficult and laborious project. Sites were hard to find, search engines were underdeveloped, there were very few theatre people who had taken an interest in, or even knew about the internet. Obviously, things have changed. Now the World Wide Web is easily accessible through a variety of web browsers, making specific knowledge of such utilities as telnet, ftp, and gopher (remember that one?) more or less obsolete.

Theatre Ypsilon - Prague's very own Vaudeville [26-03-2004] By Kay Grigar Listen 16kb/s 32kb/s In this edition I stepped out to Divadlo Ypsilon, a more melodic name than its English counterpart Theatre "Y". It has been in existence since 1963 and last week the theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary where actors from the company put on an informal performance. Snippets from the theatre's repertoire were played for the occasion exhibiting the versatility and the musicality of all the performers. I spoke with Jan Jiran who has been a resident actor and musical director at Divaldo Ypsilon for almost twenty years. He describes the theatre as having a "special" kind of humour. From 'Sold Bride' performance "It's a combination of verbal and musical humour. If you look at all of our productions we play a lot of music, a lot of songs. We have three pieces based on classical music written by Mozart, Smetana, Dvorak at the same time we have two or three pieces from the 1930's so we have jazz music or swing music too."

Extractions: AUSTRALIAN VAUDEVILLE: USING BRISBANE AS A CASE STUDY Typical Vaudeville Programs: In the 20th century the 'popular' theatre almost died completely in Australia. The new 'popular' performance space, of course, was film. Vaudeville offered a professional, live alternative to film. Vaudeville/variety/revue are very closely related theatrical forms. They each required a standard type of cast. Companies usually consisted of: male singers (bass, baritone and tenor) female singers (Soprano and Contralto) two popular type singers for lighter songs a stock comedian two leading dancers a soubrette a small ballet [originally numbering about 6 but later between 8 and 12]. The musical numbers were each accompanied by a pianist who was also on the stage. The shows were full of comic sketches and songs. A typical program consisted of: all sorts of dancing including ballet, tap, and acrobatic. magic demonstrations, singing, comic sketches, ventriloquism. Brisbane's Cremorne Theatre The Cremorne Theatre was built on the corner of what is now known as Melbourne and Stanley Streets in South Brisbane (approximately where the current Queensland Art Gallery stands). Its first performance was on Saturday 5 August 1911 with Edward Branscombe's 'Dandies' Costume Comedy Company. It was an open air theatre and the land was levelled and covered thick with bark. Wooden garden seats were arranged in a semi-circle its seating capacity has been variously estimated to be between 1800 to 3000 people. Whenever it rained the audience would converge on the stage which was the only part of the theatre that was covered. Under John Neil McCallum's proprietorship the theatre eventually gained a proper roof.

Extractions: Welcome to the online home of Jack Norton and the Mullet River Boys, musical purveyors of vintage ragtime and jazz, hobo bluegrass, honky-tonk country and neo-vaudeville folk. Jack Nortons stated goal is to, literally, corrupt an audience with pleasure. For the past decade or so, he has been doing just that by quietly producing a body of work that includes some 60 albums, countless songs, poems, short stories and about 200 shows a year in the United States, Mexico and Europe. They call him "The Hobo Minstrel" and his band of merry madmen are called, "The Mullet River Boys". They play guitar, ukulele, banjo, fiddle, string bass, whizbang and have performed at some of the largest and most well respected venues in the world. The group was named "Artists of the Year" by the Minneapolis Star Tribune in 2000, and after seeing a Jack Norton appearance, oddball crooner Tiny Tim hailed, "he is the greatest entertainer i have ever seen." Norton has shared the stage with such greats as: Norah Jones, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dave Van Ronk, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, Alejandro Escovedo, Greg Brown, Leon Redbone, Dave Moore, Tiny Tim and Willie Nelson. Jack Norton was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1979. He has lived a life spent on the road: his parents, Pentecostal preachers and part-time bluegrass musicans, kept home in Macon, Georgia; New Orleans; New York; Iowa; and Minnesota. Jack graduated in 1997 from the Arts High School in Minneapolis. A veteran performer by age 8, Jack currently works as full-time singer/songwriter and poet. The Washington Post hailed, "he is uniquely American...a near-brilliant songwriter." In the past he has paid rent by working in a kitty litter factory, as a pool shark, and as a door-to-door washboard salesman. He currently lives in the rural southern Minnesota town of Mullet River and, from time-to-time, leads Jack Norton's Wizard Oil Vaudeville Company, a conglomerated touring theatrical troupe of musicians, actors, puppeteers, filmmakers, and carnies.

Contrary to popular belief, Vaudeville was not wiped out by silent films. Many managers featured "flickers" at the end of their bills, finding them cheaper than the live closing acts that audiences walked out on anyway. Top screen stars made lucrative personal appearance tours on the big time circuits. So what killed vaudeville? The most truthful answer is that the public's tastes changed and vaudeville managers failed to adjust to those changes. In the mid-1920s, when everyone knew vaudeville was in danger, E.F. Albee set expensive new production requirements which strained performers and made it harder for most houses to turn a profit. When fashion-plate comics entertained between numbers instead of a roaring slapstick turn, vaudeville was devitalized. Cycloramas, drapery and gorgeous drops added to the glamour, but not to the comedy. Albee was responsible for much of this. He dressed up vaudeville fit to kill and it committed suicide . . . the customers stopped coming.
