Extractions: I pointed out that the February 14 feast actually commemorated two Valentines: the first a beloved Christian priest rounded up in Claudius the Goth's persecution (269 A.D.) and beheaded outside Rome; the other a bishop of Terni, about 60 miles from Rome, beheaded in another purge a few years later. (Partly because of this confusion, the Valentine commemorations were dropped from the official Church calendar of universally celebrated feasts about 25 years ago, although local churches can still choose to observe them.) Legends attribute affectionate letters from prison to both Valentines. A few days after I handed in the article, the editor called to tell me to shorten the introduction. "We're trying to get people in a romantic mood," she said, "so leave out most of the statistics (sic) about the history. We didn't think that talking about people being beheaded was very romantic."

Extractions: Valentine's Day is a time we set aside to pay tribute to love. Husbands, wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, and significant others celebrate their union with flowers, candy, gourmet dinners, or romantic getaways. But what if this year we focused on renewing our commitment to our partners and to our relationships? A romantic relationship is the hardest thing you'll ever do but it can also be the most rewarding. Marriage or commitment can bring with it heartaches, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings, as well as joys and triumphs. Being prepared to deal with the full gamut of emotions, trials, and challenges with honesty, caring, and support can make the difference between an ongoing long-term relationship and just another in a long list of short-lived ones.

Extractions: The second-graders in Jane Pintar's class at St. Ann School have clear ideas about St. Valentine's Day when it comes to what they like to get (chocolate, hands down) and what the giving is all about (being nice and showing love, they said). However, when asked this week about the saint behind the holiday, the children's thoughts were murkier. For instance, 13 of the 19 present on Wednesday thought St. Valentine was a woman. DAILY Photo by John Godbey Skyler Settles likes funny cards and sour candy for Valentine's Day, while Taylor Rovar prefers Milky Way bars; both said St. Valentine was a loving and giving person. Then the students mostly figured Valentine was honored as a saint because he helped the poor and friendless, sort of a St. Nicholas for February. "He'd give people something for Valentine's Day if someone else wouldn't," decided Donielle Eslick.

Extractions: Tradition/ritual This day is typically celebrated by giving valentines cards, candy, stuffed animals, and/or flowers to a loved one. Origin Cultural Comment Relationships are strongly governed by cultural expectation. The continuum of intimacy and independence in a relationship is often influenced by the cultural expectation of each party and by the cultural views of roles in the partnership. However, healthy relationships will have aspects of both these factors. Two pillars which are placed too closely together do not create a foundation strong enough to support weight. However, when two pillars stand together but also apart, they are able to bear weight that neither could withstandalone. When evaluating your own relationship or that of another, consider the cultural context of the relationship. This will allow you to better respect and understand the uniqueness of relationships and the complexities and mysteries of love. Monthly Themes Clothes, Spring, Transportation, Weather, Babies, Valentine s day, Winter, and more A Poem a day 180 Thematic Poems and Activities That teach and Delight http://www.kinderkorner.com/themes.html
Extractions: I vary my themes a bit from year to year, and I don't usually teach them all every year. Because I often teach a multi-age K-1 class or loop from kindergarten to first grade then back again, I sometimes have the same children two years in a row. They enjoy revisiting familiar themes and stories, and there are always new activities, stories, and poems being added, which makes it extra fun. The students who stay with me for two years do the work on a much higher level than they did the year before, and get more from the experience. So for me, repeating the material has never been a problem. This is a general schedule of what I pick and choose from during the year. I usually work on two or more themes at the same time, and there's a lot of overlap in some areas. If the kids are REALLY interested in a particular area or theme, we spend more time on it and I eliminate or shorten something else. Many of the basic themes like colors and patterns are woven throughout the year, and many themes carry over from one month to the next. We also focus on one or two authors or story characters each month. If you know of any good resources I should add to my units, have a website or thematic unit you'd like me to link to, or have songs and poems to share, please send me a note at

Extractions: Buy one from zShops for: Average review score: I love this book! My two year old and I pour over this book every night noticing different things in the collage-like pages and having discussions about things like kindness and patience. It's a great springboard for introducing these ideas and inspiring to me to be more loving as I teach my daughter about love. I also appreciate that Halperin includes all kinds of people in her illustrations all different races, different cultures, people with disabilities, etc... Our life is a little richer thanks to this book. Beautiful book This is a lovely book with amazing depth. My three year old daughter finds something new in the illustrations on every reading, as do I. The book will grow with her as many of the illustrations make sense to a three year old in one way and an older child in another way. Beautiful!
