Extractions: America has historically been one of the most educated countries in the world. The literacy rate in the early 1800's, prior to the establishment of government run, tax-supported schools, was over 99%. Not only were America's early citizens able to read and write, they were very good at it. An example of how good is found in the Federalist Papers. The Federalist Papers were written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay in 1787-88. These letters, published in early American newspapers, explained to the people of the United States the need for the Constitution. They were written on a level that could easily be understood by the average American farmer in 1788. Today, most high school graduates would have difficulty understanding them. In fact, one law professor at a major university, who assigns the Federalist Papers as required reading, states that his graduate-level students regularly complain that the assignment is too difficult. Following is a discussion of the outstanding educational system of early America and how it evolved to what it is today. Home schooling was the primary means of educating children in America from the founding of our country in the early 1600's until the late 1800's. Many of the most brilliant and respected minds in history were educated at home. Famous American home schoolers include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, Patrick Henry, General George S. Patton, General Douglas McArthur, Booker T. Washington, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, and Mark Twain.

Bush's political appointees at the environment-related agencies: DOE, DOI, EPA, FERC (New!) and USDA. Communities that once welcomed oil refineries as economic opportunities now face abandoned sites that threaten the health of their residents. Updated 6/2/2004 A man closely connected to Pakistan's nuclear arms trafficking network was convicted more than two years ago of exporting uranium enrichment equipment to A.Q. Khan, yet officials apparently did not follow through with an investigation. Since 9/11, the Bush administration has emphasized the need to halt the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Yet for all its talk and seemingly noble intentions, the administrations recent proposals are insufficient to stem proliferation. More ominously, programs it has already introduced undermine existing non-proliferation efforts, raise the prospect of a return to nuclear testing, and significantly increase the risk of nuclear weapons actually being used. Vanity Fair article No. 2 at DOI has apparent conflicts of interest
