But fishing, coastal development and other threats remain, and greater protection is needed. U.S. Virgin Islands The U.S. Virgin Islands sparkle with natural beauty, and are truly among the living jewels of the Caribbean. But their significance goes far beyond beauty. The beaches and reefs, along with stands of mangroves and seagrass beds, form an intricate, thriving, web of marine life. Virgin Islands National Park, new and expanded national monuments declared by former President Clinton, and other marine protected areas provide some protection to these valuable and spectacular places. But fishing, coastal development, and other human activities are nonetheless damaging coral reefs and associated ecosystems. Key Habitats Mangrove forests grow in shallow water along the shores. Their branches provide nesting space for birds, while their prop roots shelter young fish, invertebrates and a host of other species. Many reef fish species produce larvae that settle in the mangrove habitats, where they find plenty of microscopic food to eat and protection from predators. As they grow, the young fish migrate out to populate the reefs.
