Extractions: Vandalism was minimised by enabling community involvement from start; from design through to planting. Where trees were removed they were replaced as soon as possible to show the site was cared for. In most cases the vandals eventually left the site alone. Weed-free areas were created prior to tree planting by spraying, this helped the volunteers locate where to plant the trees. Following planting, herbicide control was continued to keep weed growth to a minimum and thereby aid tree establishment. To avoid having large areas of dead grass, which could have been susceptible to burning and was considered unattractive by the public, the area between the trees was not sprayed. Here the grass was left uncut. This provided a good habitat for insects, and discouraged the public from going amongst the trees. The trees were planted at 1.5 to 2m centres. In most cases cell grown stock was used, as they are easy for children to handle, they can be planted slightly later in the year and are less prone to desiccation. At selected sites bare-root stock and large standards were used, although this depended on additional funding from other sources. For example, the Tree Council provided standards for Broughton High School to mark their Silver Jubilee.

The program works closely with nonprofit organizations to increase the number of trees in the City and help improve the quality of life. Current tree inventory includes over 30,000 palm species and 170,000 various shade trees. An urban forest is simply trees and vegetation in and around a town or city environment. In San Diego, the only part of the forest managed by public agencies is that which grows on public land such as along streets and highways, in parks, and around public buildings. Like a natural forest, an urban forest is an entire ecosystem which includes trees on both public and private property. However, unlike a natural forest, an urban forest usually needs help from people to survive. The City of San Diego's Tree Selection Guide (PDF: 36K) provides information about trees recommended for use in the public right-of-way. The guide encourages selections that are compatible with the planting location, thus preventing damage to public improvements, while ensuring species diversity.

Urban Forestry Commission When walking around your city, note that wherever you see trees you are seeing part of the urban forest. The trees of the urban forest dwell in parks, along streets, in yards, on empty lots and in protected areas such as stream banks. Without trees, there would be no urban forest, and without an urban forest, much of the wildlife that inhabits it would be at risk. Birds, animals, insects, and fish receive sustenance from trees. People have an important role in maintaining and promoting the urban forest; they plant and care for its trees and receive its many benefits in return. The Urban Forestry program exists to help residents select the appropriate trees, provide education about tree health and maintenance, and protect, preserve, and restore the urban forest canopy. The University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture has additional resources and information about the benefits of urban forestry. Urban forestry is the planning for, and management of, a community's forest resources to enhance the quality of life. The process integrates the economic, environmental, political, historical, and social values of the community to develop a comprehensive management plan for the urban forest. The following diagram illustrates this process. A community in this definition is an area of human settlement that can be located in a rural or metropolitan region. The urban forest includes the vegetation, open space, and related natural resources of the area. Urban Forestry Urban Community Forestry At first glance, the term urban forestrymay seem like an oxymoron. People tend to think of urban places http://www.dnr.state.md.us/forests/programs/urban/
Extractions: At first glance, the term Urban Forestry may seem like an oxymoron. People tend to think of urban places as cities, while forestry evokes images of parks or other large tracts of woodland. These are certainly contradictory images. So let's take a closer look. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an urban area is a place with a population of at least 2,500 people. This definition encompasses a wide range of communities, most of the cities and towns in Maryland. Forestry refers to individual parks, yards and street trees, as well as forest fragments such as wooded parkland, unimproved lots and naturally regenerating areas. Urban Forests are generally, though not exclusively, thought of as providing services; recreation, aesthetics, wildlife habitat, stormwater management, carbon storage and interception of airborne pollutants are some. This differs from the traditional view of forests as primarily providing goods like lumber, pulpwood or firewood. Emerald Ash Borer The emerald ash borer, an exotic insect pest affecting ash trees, was detected in Maryland in 2003. To control this threat to our ash trees, Maryland has developed a remediation plan that is a cooperative effort between the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). MDA is responsible for the detection and removal of the pest and the DNR Forest Service is responsible for remediation efforts. Seeing the Forest Through The Trees Forests and trees...natural resources that can be cared for thoughtfully to enhance our quality of life and can be used, protected, and replanted for the future. But is planting and caring for trees an easy task or a daily challenge?
