Odd Things In Pitt's Libraries One woman's unusual findings in the stacks at the university of Pittsburgh. http://otipl.blogspot.com/
Extractions: From the title, and the chapter titles, this looked totally arcane and pointless as an idea for a book, but it actually draws on a lot of interesting first-person historical documents, starting out with an account of King Louis XIII's (a long-awaited male heir) birth in 1601. Here's midwife Louise Bourgeois speaking (her 1617 "How and When the Queen Gave Birth" was itself newly translated in 2000): He asked me at every hour if the queen would soon give birth and what the infant would be. To quiet him, I said yes. He asked me again what the baby would be. I told him that it would be whatever I would like. "What," he asked, "isn't it made?" I said yes, that it was a baby, but that I could make it a boy or a girl, whichever pleased me. He said, "midwife, since it depends on you, put there the pieces of a boy."

View my complete profile Friday, June 11, 2004 The National Science Foundation's Massive Digital Library for Education: Opportunities and Challenges for Teachers and Librarians This is a good write up off the National Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library (NSDL) program. The National Science Foundation (NSF) released its first call for proposals for the National Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology Education Digital Library (NSDL) program early in 2000. Building on work supported under the multi-agency Digital Libraries Initiative, this program aims to establish a national digital library that will constitute an online network of learning environments and resources for science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education at all levels. Fiscal year 1994 marked the beginning of the Digital Libraries Initiative (DLI), a multi-agency research effort involving the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). NSF served as the lead agency in this program that provided support for basic research into the transformative potential of information technology as applied to library and information science.
