Tonga Tuvalu Vanuatu Geography Tuvalu, one of the worlds smallest countries, lie in the south-east Pacific. Tuvalu consists of nine atoll islands with a population of 10,300 people over a total land area of only 26 square km. The countrys exclusive economic zone (E E Z) covers approximately 750,000 square km of ocean. Tuvalus ocean is a key resource in terms of food source and export earnings. The people of Tuvalu are ethnically Polynesian and speak the Tuvaluan mother tongue and the English language. The atolls are among the harshest environments: flat ribbons of sand with limited fresh water; supporting a very narrow range of vegetation; with geographic fragmentation making transport and communications, both internal and external costly and difficult. Under the UN classification, Tuvalu stands as a Least Developed Country (LDC). This is attributed to its limited economic resource base, poor land resource base, poor sanitation and water supply. Tuvalu has a per capita GDP rate of US$1,157. The main source of income for the people are derived from the sale of copra and fishing rights, cash employment and remittances from relatives working abroad, particularly seamen working for foreign shipping companies.

Extractions: Press Review Archive Wednesday, 28 August, 2002 Tuvalu Fights for its Life by Angie Knox, 28 August 2002 Shrinking: Tuvalu´s nine atolls are at risk Leaders of the tiny island nation of Tuvalu are one of the most vocal minorities at the Earth Summit in Johannesburg; they are desperate to halt global warming before their nation disappears beneath the Pacific Ocean. Tuvalu is currently the second smallest country (after Nauru), but it's getting smaller. The group of nine coral atolls' highest point is four metres above sea level, and scientists say in the next 50 years rising sea levels could swamp the islands and create the world's first casualty of climate change. listen to the full report by Angie Knox Just days before the Earth Summit opened in Johannesburg, freak waves flooded the road on Tuvalu's main island of Funafuti. The four metre waves hit without warning, flooding homes and gardens. Standing up to their knees in seawater, local residents like this woman wondered aloud if this heralded the beginning of the end for their low-lying atoll homeland: "It's frightening me very much. I don't know what's going to happen. I'm worried about the island; this is the very best island I know, and it's going to be drowned in the sea I think . . . it's enough, we have to move out."
