The most widely spoken indigenous African language is Swahili, spoken by nearly 50 million Africans, followed by Hausa and Yoruba, each with more than 20 million speakers. Several languages have only a few thousand speakers. Scholars generally recognize four African language families: Niger-Congo, Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan.

In 1884, at Berlin in Germany, by the stroke of a foreign pen, our continent was divided into politico-economic structures with neither our input nor knowledge. We have therefore in our hands the unenviable task of making sure that those structures and norms which we inherited are not turned into permanent barriers and sources of division, but rather serve as membranes, allowing for a free exchange of ideas and engendering co-operation in all fields. Extractions: THE GREAT LAKES OF AFRICA Two Thousand Years of History by Jean-Pierre Chrétien Reviewed by John Shattuck In central Africa, a genocidal war has raged for nearly a decade, costing more than 4 million lives in Rwanda, Burundi and Congo and precipitating the worst humanitarian crisis in more than half a century. Central Africa shares this gruesome recent past with southeastern Europe, where in the 1990's the Balkans were swept by a wave of killing and "ethnic cleansing." In both cases, genocide was widely misunderstood to be the inevitable product of "ancient hatreds." Jean-Pierre Chrétien, a French historian with vast experiences in the Great Lakes region of Africa, has undertaken the formidable task of tracing the roots of the region's violence and exposing the ideological myths on which the ancient-hatreds theory rests. The story begins with the geography of the central African highlands. Despite its equatorial location, Chrétien says, "the region is blessed with good climate, is rich with diverse soils and plants, and has prospered thanks to some strong basic techniques: the association of cattle keeping and agriculture; the diffusion of the banana a millennium ago; and the mastery of iron metallurgy two millennia ago." In this healthy environment, complex social structures evolved in which the idea of kingship and strong central authority took hold and flourished for more than 300 years before the arrival of colonial powers in the mid-19th century.

Extractions: "A restless world is full of chances." (John Armstrong) AFRICA in general has serious political and economic problems. Unemployment runs at +30%. Military spending is rampant. Several nations are holding significant numbers of refugees from neighboring nations. Xenophobia and anti-refugee sentiment is growing. It's not at all safe for journalists, foreigners, or international peacekeepers, and it's hard to tell combatants from noncombatants with all the insurgencies, rebellions, militias, proxy and civil wars. Africa is also in the midst of denial about the worst epidemic since the medieval Black Death which killed 20 million in Europe since all the nations in Africa account for 75% of the world's population infected with AIDS. Some 25 million Africans are infected with AIDS and can be expected to die within a decade, and about 4 million new infections are occurring each year. African TERRORISM revolves around state, ethnic, religious, and tribal animosities. Dictatorships are common, and frequently produce state-sponsored terrorism. Ethnic cleansing and genocide are common at the hands of militia groups. Religious battles go on between the major denominations and hundreds of tribal religions. To make matters worse, Africa is still one of the last places on Earth where left-wing radical Communism runs rampant. To understand the mess that is Africa requires an understanding of anti-colonialism as a source of terrorism.

In meetings of the G-7 Finance Ministers and other fora, British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has delivered the same message. This message, contrasting to the indifference to Africa displayed by Blair's and Brown's counterparts in Washington, won applause on Blair's recently completed trip to West Africa. But commentators also raised many hard questions about British policies.

Population estimates were: 10,000 Western lowland gorilla (Fossey, 1983); 258 Eastern lowland gorilla (Biological Conservation, 1993), and 300 Mountain gorilla (Science, 1995). The ranges of the gorillas may be defined in geographical terms. They range in an equatorial belt across central Africa between five degrees north and five degrees south of the equator (Schaller, 1963). The Western lowland gorilla ranges in the Congo and Gaboni lowland basin on the west side of the African continent. The Eastern lowland gorilla ranges in the eastern lowlands of Zaire. The Mountain gorilla ranges in the eight volcanic mountains comprising the Virungas at the edge of the great African rift valley. The Virunga mountains reach elevations from 11,000 to 15,000 feet. The Virunga mountain range of the Mountain gorilla is bordered by three countries: Zaire, Rwanda and Uganda. The majority of the Mountain gorillas are in Rwanda (Fossey, 1983).
