The International Olympic Committee added the event to the Summer Games in September of 1994. It is the hope of the International Triathlon Union, which was established in 1989, that the event will further expose the sport of triathlon on a world-wide scope. The ITU has set specific rules for the Olympic Games. The distances will be 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10K run the standard world-wide lengths set after the inception of the ITU World Championship. The distances are shorter than the more well-known Ironman distances (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run), forcing participants to prepare for a speed race, more than a duel of endurance. The first known swim, bike, run triathlons were held at San Diego's (Calif.) Mission Bay in 1974 and were run by the San Diego Track Club on summer evenings. U.S. Naval Officer John Collins, one of the athletes in the first Mission Bay race, was a major influence in establishing the Ironman.
Olympic Preview: Triathlon While not as demanding as Hawaii s annual Ironman triathlon, the olympic editionis still a great exhibition of strength, speed, and stamina. Did You Know? http://www.infoplease.com/spot/ol-triathlon.html
Extractions: The competitors will race in a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40km bike ride, and 10km run. The Athens triathlon will take place in Vouliagmeni, a seaside resort area about 45 km from the center of Athens. The swimming will be held at Oceanida beach and the cycling and running events in the mountainous section of Vouliagmeni. The race is held with a continuously running clock and therefore the changeovers or transitions between the swimming and biking and between the biking and running will be crucial to a triathlete's success. The first person to complete the full course is the winner. The swimming event starts the race. Competitors begin in a large mass, diving off a pontoon into the water. They swim a triangular course marked with buoys and ropes and can use any swimming stroke they prefer. Once they get out of the water, the racers don their helmets, grab their bikes, and start pedaling. They must ride the bike the entire way unless they get a flat tire. In that case, they can run with the bike to one of six tire-changing stations. In most triathlons the competitors must change the tire themselves but at Athens, specially trained teams will perform the task for them.
Extractions: Road cycling (24-25, 27 Sept) The Olympic triathlon will be staged in the seaside suburb of Vouliagmeni, 17km from Athens city centre. The venue will also be used for the road racing event during the Paralympics. It has been one of the more straightforward developments due, in large part, to the natural advantages of the area. Triathlon is split into three disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. The the sea on the south coast of Attica is warm and calm, the cycle course follows roads through nearby hills to Aghia Marina, and the run is along the scenic and flat waterfront. There will be 3,300 temporary seats, and the one area of concern remains the ability of the new Athens Metro line to carry spectators to and from the centre.

Last Page Perhaps the most significant naming decision was to name the streets of the Olympic Village after modern Olympic legends, honouring their remarkable achievements and inspirational efforts. Twenty-seven Australian Olympians and Paralympians and 25 international Olympians were honoured in the streets of the Village. In a first in Olympic history the names were to be incorporated for all time as the streets of the suburb of Newington after the Games. OCAs greatest task was the construction of the new venues needed to host the Olympic Games. When OCA was established in 1995 it had the task of constructing 15 new major Olympic sporting venues as well as the Olympic and Media Villages and it had less than five years in which to complete the task. In fact, all the permanent venues outlined in Sydneys Olympic Bid were completed by the end of 1999, fully nine months before the start of the Games. This allowed them to be tested during SOCOGs test events and represented the earliest completion of venues for a Games in Olympic history. The venue for womens water polo, added to the sports program in early 2000, and the controversial temporary beach volleyball venue, were completed just prior to the Games.

Beijing Olympic Triathlon Route Needs Trial: ITU President competitions from now on. triathlon, which doesn t have a long historyin China, entered the olympic Games in Sydney four years ago. Close. http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-03/30/content_319233.htm
Extractions: Updated: 2004-03-30 14:39 The triathlon competition route for the Beijing Olympic Games, which has not been ratified by the International Triathlon Union (ITU), needs to be tested in the inaugural Beijing International Triathlon in September, ITU President Les McDonald said Monday in Beijing. Les McDonald told Xinhua that he inspected the route around theShisanling Reservoir, 50 kilometers northwest to Beijing, which will be tried in the Beijing International Triathlon slated for September 12. "However," he said, "we have to wait after the Beijing International to listen to participants' opinion before the final decision is made." Among all the competitions in the Beijing Games, triathlon is the only one whose venue and route have not been decided. Beijing had planned to put it in the Ti'anmen area, which can best represent Beijing and China, but gave up due to technical reasons. McDonald thinks that the Shisanling route is OK but needs improvement.
