Extractions: Making Olympic History New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Thousands of others made their way to the venues to watch the first sporting events. For athletes and spectators, public transportation functioned smoothly. The demand upon the system was immense. On the very first day public transport had to move 1.3 million spectators, an increase of 37 per cent over the demand on an ordinary workday. It passed the test. In the days leading up to the Games, a worrying shortage of buses and bus drivers had become apparent, especially of drivers who knew the routes of Sydney. An appeal sent out for additional volunteers proved overwhelmingly successful. Numerous Sydneysiders, mostly retired taxi and bus drivers, volunteered to be navigators. A minor incident on this first day was a magpie attack on staff at the Aquilina Reserve softball venue. Three officials were slightly injured, and magpie catchers from the National Parks and Wildlife Service had to be called in to remove the offending birds. Seagulls, fruit-bats and cockatoos, possums, pelicans and snakes reminded visitors the bush was never far away from the city in Sydney. The other sports to begin on Day 1 were aquatics, archery, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, gymnastics, hockey, handball, judo, shooting, table tennis, volleyball and weightlifting. They offered magic moments to crowds already dazzled by the Opening Ceremony, the magnitude of the Games, and the splendour of the host city.

Extractions: Calm and focused. At the start tension filled the transition area and swim staging zone. Warm-ups were taken in nervous silence. Sheila seemed oddly unaffected, as though she was competing in a local triathlon, not the most important race of her career. Chatty and vibrant the morning of the race, Taormina went through her pre race ritual quickly and efficiently, utterly indifferent to the pressure of the day. (Click to enlarge) The strong chase group lacked organization. After a 15 second swim to bike transition Taormina joined forces with friend Barb Lindquist. The two were off on the first of five laps of the curvy, undulating bike course. Taormina rode with exceptional power, pushing a 55/12 and 13 gear across the flats and into the wind. Her cadence was slow and menacing as they clipped off lap after lap at an average speed of 23.5 mph. This was the fastest bike split of the day by over a half mile per hour. Taormina seemed at total ease over one minute in front of a chase pack of 12 that contained Jennifer Gutierrez, Susan Bartholomew and Karen Smyers. Despite several concerted efforts on the part of the twelve-person chase group, they only lost time to the duo of Taormina and Lindquist.

Triathlon as we know it in America got its start in San Diego, California in September 1974, four years before the famed Ironman saw its birth in Hawaii, and 53 years after the first known actual swim, bike, run event. This first known Triathlon event was held on September 4, 1921 in Marseilles, France. The Petit Perillon swim club held they race and called it " Course Des Trois Sports." This translates to "The Race of Three Sports." The race consisted of a bicycle leg of about 7K (4.2 miles), a run of 5K (3.1 miles), and finished with a 200 meter swim. This first actual Triathlon was won by Lulu Helmet. The founders of the sport, Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan had never put on a race before the inaugural event. The actual race took place on a Wednesday evening because no arrangements could be made for a weekend event. Extractions: Your One-Stop Triathlon Shop In Scotland : Call 0131 662 8777 Triathlon was invented in the early 1970s by the San Diego Track club, as an alternative workout to the rigors of track training. The club's first event consisted of a 10km run, an 8km cycle and a 500metre swim. In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in Avignon, France and the first official world championships were held. This standard distance, now called Olympic Distance is used for the ITU World Cup series and the Olympic Games. In 1994, at the IOC Congress in Paris, France, triathlon was awarded full medal status on the Olympic programme and made it's debut at the 2000 summer games in Sydney, Australia. The women's event took place on the first day with the men competing on day two. ITU now has over a hundred affiliated national federations around the world. The president: ITU's current and founding president is Les McDonald from Canada. Les was a competitive age-group triathlete as well as a mountain climber, skier and semi-professional soccer player. The Executive Board of ITU has 4 table officers and 7 board members . Each Region of ITU is represented on its Executive Board.
Extractions: The Girl's Game - ABC Radio with Amanda Smith, 29 September 2000 Women have played an enormous role in painting the Olympic picture. Since Charlotte Cooper of Great Britain won gold in singles tennis at the 1900 Paris Olympics, many women have put their stamp on Olympic history. There are those who have dominated, like the great Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen who became the first woman to win four gold medals in a single Games, and Larissa Latynina of the Soviet Union, whose nine gold, five silver and four bronze over the course of three Olympiads remains a record for men and women. There are those who are renown for their "firsts" like Nadia Comanici who became the first Olympic gymnast male or female to score a perfect 10 in competition and American Joan Benoit who won the first womens Olympic marathon in 1984. Women athletes in many countries have historically made a disproportionately high contribution to the medals count at the Games. This has certainly been true for Australia. In certain Olympic sports, particularly swimming and track and field, Australian women have been outstanding. For example in track and field up to and including Atlanta, since 1948 women have constituted just over 30% of the track and field team but have won 75% of all medals and 11 out of 14 gold medals.

Les McDonald told Xinhua that he inspected the route around theShisanling Reservoir, 50 kilometers northwest to Beijing, which will be tried in the Beijing International Triathlon slated for September 12. "However," he said, "we have to wait after the Beijing International to listen to participants' opinion before the final decision is made." Among all the competitions in the Beijing Games, triathlon is the only one whose venue and route have not been decided. Beijing had planned to put it in the Ti'anmen area, which can best represent Beijing and China, but gave up due to technical reasons. McDonald thinks that the Shisanling route is OK but needs improvement.

Count Georgia graduate Sheila Taormina, the swimmer turned triathlete, among the chosen. On July 25, 1996, after turning in the fastest prelim split on the American swimming squad, Taormina became the first Masters swimmer ever to win Olympic gold. On that day, at the age of 26, she teamed with fellow Americans Trina Jackson, Cristina Teuscher and Jenny Thompson for a gold medal-winning performance in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Now in the second chapter of her story, Taormina travels to Sydney, Australia, at the end of August, representing the United States in the triathlon. Taormina earned her position on this year's Olympic squad after winning the women's Olympic triathlon trials in Irving, Texas, on Saturday, May 27. Triathlon, which consists of swimming, cycling and running, will make its first appearance as a medal sport at the Olympic Games in Sydney. The women's competition will be held on September 16.

Extractions: Excerpt from Joe Pagnam's article in the 1995 ITU Bermuda Triathlon World Cup Race Programme Triathlon in Bermuda has a history almost as long as the relatively young sport itself. The first official triathlon to take place in Bermuda was held in 1979 and was a far cry from the hi-tech sophisticated events that take place today. Jim Butterfield, who has been integral to Bermuda triathlons, organised this first event which took place in and around Harrington Sound. Things were a little different back then. For one thing, the order of events consisted of a 1,000 yard triangular swim, followed by a 7.1 mile run around Harrington Sound and a 14.2 mile (two-lap) cycle to round off the race. The ten men and five women who lined up for the start were pioneers of sorts. Some of them were inspired by the challenge, others never competed again! Jim Butterfield had given up his chance to compete in 1979 as he was busy coordinating the event, but others such as Bob Oliver, Midge Oliver, Linda Dillon and Marianne Herbert are still competing today. (Watch for Linda Dillon in Hawaii Ironman 2000) Those who did compete were only aware of the upcoming event a few weeks in advance so training was limited. All of the individual competitors, with the exception of winner Richard Goodwin, who was a leading Island cyclist, were basically runners. Fluorescent colours and tight Spandex outfits were yet to hit our shores, and the females just wore the bikinis they took to
