The triathlon will take place in the Las Colinas Urban center, May 20-21, 2000. Race activity, including the swim start in Lake Carolyn, finish, and transition area will be based around Williams Square. "Irving is a great city to host the inaugural USA triathlon Olympic trials," Locke said. "The 2012 Bid Committee and the new Dallas/Fort Worth Sports Commission put together an excellent bid and I am confident the trials will be a world class event that helps our sport continue to grow. The combination of a great venue and a supportive corporate and community base made the Irving site a unanimous decision. It's always nice to feel truly embraced by a community, especially a world class area like Dallas/Fort Worth." "Irving definitely benefits from a long association with outstanding sporting events. We're delighted with Irving's selection as site of the 2000 triathlon Olympic trials and look forward to continuing to work aggressively to bring additional sporting events to Irving," stated ICVB Executive Director Jim Clark.

Then at the beginning of the eighties a new kind of sports came up : triathlon. As there are many similarities between classical athletics and triathlon, the two movements have been working together since in 1986. FLA PRESIDENTS Alex Bodry : 2001 - Sports Up from the start the FLA is contributing successfully to sports activities in Luxembourg. But even before FLA existed, Luxembourg athlets participated at international competitions e.g. Olympic Games. In Paris in 1900, Michel Teato was the winner of the olympic marathon. Michel Teato had the Luxembourg citizenship but as he lived in France was participating at the games for his French club, that was usual those days. So nobody in the Grand-Duchy knew that Luxembourg won gold in Paris. The first official Luxembourg athlets at Olympic Games were Paul Fournelle (100 m) and Marcel Pelletier (discus and shot put) in Stockholm (SWE) in 1912.

Extractions: Triathlon History Triathlon can trace its roots back only to the mid 1970's. It appears to have grown out of the fitness boom that took place around that time, particularly apparent in California. The first triathlon appears to have taken place in 1974 as part of a challenge race between swim and run clubs in California. In 1978 an ex-US naval officer, John Collins, so the popular myth goes, became involved in a bar room argument about which were the fittest athletes. The conclusion of this argument was that there should be a challenge involving the three sports of swimming, cycling and running which would determine who was the fittest (the not-so-popular story would suggest that John Collins had previously participated in a triathlon in California). The 1979 running of the event drew a slightly larger entry. Collins' had taken the precaution of making a condition of entry that you had to join the organising committee of the race to take part. This proved to be his saviour, as on race day the sea conditions were to rough for the race to take place. The decision was taken to hold the event the following day. Several of the entrants were unable to stay the extra day and threatened to sue Collins, however this effectively meant sueing themselves and the race proceeded, again with 18 competitors. The Ironman's fame grew and the television network ABC begun coverage of the race in 1980. Then in 1982, a college student, Julie Moss took part, leading until the final few metres of the run. At this stage she began staggering and repeatedly fell down. With her body shutting down she pushed aside helpers in her attempt to reach the finish line only to collapse several times more, until, just 20 metres from the end of the 140 mile race whilst sitting on the floor, she was passed for the lead, losing the race. The drama of that race hit a chord with the US television public and the Ironman, and triathlon became a major event.

Extractions: The history of the sport is relatively short and is reputed to date back to around 1974 in Southern California when a group of friends began to train together. The group contained mostly runners, a few swimmers and the odd cyclists or two. It wasn't long before the group was organising informal fun runs and races, followed by events containing swimming and running, and a natural progression led to include cycling. Triathlon thus evolved from this healthy way of life in Southern California. Today over 350 Triathlon events are held in Great Britain alone, in addition to duathlons, which combine any two of the three disciplines on Triathlon. These events are administered by the British Triathlon Association.

Then, one week ago, an Associated Press story datelined London ran on the front pages of sports sections of the New York Times , the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and around the country with ominous headlines: "Triathlon's Olympic status in jeopardy." In the AP article, IOC officials stated they were concerned about "infighting" that has plagued the sport and expressed dissatisfaction that the ITU had failed to respond to two letters from the IOC asking to explain and respond to the accusations made by dissatisfied factions in Europe, Canada and Latin America. IOC director general Francois Carrard was quoted by the AP as saying: "These personal quarrels damage the credibility of the sport and the athletes."
