Extractions: Organic gardening involves the production of food, flowers and other agricultural products without the use of synthetic inputs such as chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides and herbicides, chemical growth regulators or hormones. It means using techniques that add to soil health and work with nature, not against it (adapted from the definition of the Government of British Columbia). Since the early 1990s, the topic of organic/natural food has moved beyond the health food store and the vegetarian crowd to become a concern of mainstream Canadians. Organic food has moved out of the realm of "alternative" to become a practical and healthy dietary choice for a mass audience. However you don't have to rely on farmers or health food stores to supply your organic foods - transform your own backyard garden into an organic oasis. In principle, organic gardening: Uses no synthetic pesticides and insecticides - synthetic pesticides pollute the environment, kill beneficial organisms and don't control pests effectively on a long term basis. In fact, pests have been known to develop immunity to certain pesticides. (see Biological Pest Control Conserves/recycles resources by composting vegetable scraps and using animal manure for fertilizer. Increases the organic matter in the soil with compost and 100% organic fertilizers. Lets the fertile soil feed the plants, rather than synthetic fertilizers.

Extractions: How to Protect Trees In Your Yard Trees in urban areas are susceptible to stresses such as air pollution, lack of water due to pavement and asphalt, and poor soils, which lack the replenishing nutrients from the fallen leaves and trees of the forest floor. Compacted clay soils prevent roots from growing deep in the ground, and soils compacted by human activity can suffocate the roots of trees. Environmental stresses, just like with us humans, make trees more susceptible to disease and injury. The best way to protect trees in your care is regular maintenance, especially mulching. During times of drought, young trees may need additional watering. Tree roots need non-compacted soils and room to spread, and certain types of ground cover are preferable underneath trees. Christmas Tree Selection And Care To ensure its beauty this Christmas, take extra care in selecting After the holiday season is over the containerized tree can be planted in your yard. http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/gt/xmastree/xmastree.htm
Extractions: Christmas Tree Selection and Care by Dr. Bob Black, Consumer Horticultural Specialist (Click on pictures for larger images.) The tradition of decorating a tree for Christmas originated in Germany several hundred years ago and was brought to this country by German settlers during the last century. Today the Christmas tree is one of the most beautiful symbols of Christmas and a great favorite with both adults and children . To ensure its beauty this Christmas, take extra care in selecting, preparing and decorating your tree. It is important to choose a fresh tree and to keep it as fresh as possible so that your tree will last through the holiday season. Select a tree with good needle holding ability. Scotch and white pine and Douglas and Balsam fir have naturally good needle-holding qualities, while spruce trees tend to lose needles quickly. Freshly cut trees hold their needles better and are more resistant to ignition. Bend the needles to determine the tree's freshness. They should be supple and springy to the touch. Bounce the butt of the tree on the ground to see if any needles drop. If more than a few needles drop, the tree is not fresh. The sap on the tree stump should be sticky and moist, not hard or caked. Also choose a tree with an attractive color and a full, bushy appearance. Most people prefer a conical, symmetrical shape to their tree. The branches should be sturdy enough to hold ornaments and other decorations such as small gifts.

Extractions: Christmas Tree Care What's the best way to take care of your Christmas tree? If you purchase a real Christmas tree, the following tips will help it stay in good condition. The first step is to purchase a tree. It is a good idea to buy trees from lots early, because trees dry out at lots. Store them in water in a shaded location. Try gently pulling on a few of the needles. They should not come off easily. Also, the needles should bend and be flexible. With the exception of Norway Pine, if the needles snap or seem brittle, look for another tree. Once you get your tree home, cut several inches off the bottom of the trunk. Immediately put the tree into a bucket of clean, warm water. A fresh cut tree takes up an amazing amount of water as it warms up. Next, make sure your tree stand is clean. Locate your tree in an area away from (drying) heat vents and fireplaces. Transfer the tree to the stand and water with luke-warm to cool water. Additives are not necessary or recommended. There are no potions that preserve trees or make them less flammable. Check the tree stand at least twice a day. Never allow the water level to go below the cut on the bottom of the trunk. If the cut area is exposed to air it seals. The tree will no longer take up water. Before you decorate, check all lights to make sure there are no frayed wires or broken bulbs. Only use lights that are rated for use indoors. Turn off Christmas tree lights when you go to bed or when you are away from home.

Extractions: Working at a permaculture (permanent + culture) institute, many people ask me, "How do I start a permaculture on my own?" The first step, I tell them, is to do something close to home, something that will not take much time nor require much effort, something that will easily slip into your routine yet be a constant reminder and reward of your landscape's abundance. Start in an area which you and others will pass by often so that you will be witness to the fruits of your labor - somewhere between your car and your front door. Start by planting a fruit tree in your front yard! For less than an hour of work a fruit tree will reward you year after year with its many yields; any combination of fruits, nuts, syrup, shade, medicines, fuel, fodder, and/or wildlife habitat. One mulberry tree alone can attract so many birds that bird watchers will never want to leave home. You will have also completed your first lesson in permaculture. Planting a fruit tree in your front yard illustrates two important principles of design: that we gain the highest yield possible for our effort, and that each component in our landscape has several functions. A fruit tree will give you the biggest bang for your buck, and that is what permaculture is all about! A front yard that produces fruit also helps to create community. I love the wonder I see on my next door neighbor's face, Zachary, age 12, as he explores the plum and pear trees I planted in my family's front yard in Houston. He will not grow up unsure of where fruit comes from and will quickly learn the difference between store-bought and locally grown foods. We have many other neighbors who stop to visit with my mother because they are drawn by our trees producing fruit. For my grandmother, whom I grew up with, the same trees offer a beautiful array of blossoms in the spring, and are a reminder of the food she grew in her family's victory garden after World War II.

Extractions: This is a guide to help you obtain the benefits of your new trees and increase their chance of long term survival. Back to Top THE BENEFITS OF YOUR TREE Back to Top SELECTING THE BEST LOCATION Analyze your planting location for the type of soil, moisture/irrigation, and surrounding objects which could interfere with the tree's growth. Visualize the tree as fully grown when you plant it. A large tree should not be planted under powerlines or close to buildings. Avoid weak wooded trees such as Ear-Leaf Acacia, Bischofia, and Silk Oak as they tend to break up in high winds. Avoid trees with aggressive root systems like Ficus or Black Olive trees near buildings or underground utilities.
