There were no schools, no hospitals, no books, no reading and writing, because there was no alphabet as we know it. There were no shops for food and clothes, you had to eat what you could grow and dress in wool. Often there were famines because people ran out of food. It was a dark and cold age with little comfort.

The images reveal the structure that existed in the universe when it was a tiny fraction of its current age and 1,000 times smaller and hotter than it is today. In Europe, the University of Rome La Sapienza is involved in the project called BOOMERANG. For the calculations, NERSC's 696-node Cray T3E supercomputer was used. Total computing time was less than three weeks on this machine. Detailed analysis of the images is already shedding light on some of cosmology's outstanding mysteries the nature of the matter and energy that dominate intergalactic space and whether space is "curved" or "flat." The project, dubbed BOOMERANG (Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics), obtained the images using an extremely sensitive telescope suspended from a balloon that circumnavigated the Antarctic in late 1998. The balloon carried the telescope at an altitude of almost 37 kilometers (120,000 feet) for 10-1/2 days. The results were published in the April 27 issue of Nature Today, the universe is filled with galaxies and clusters of galaxies. But 12-15 billion years ago, following the Big Bang, the universe was very smooth, incredibly hot and dense. The intense heat that filled the embryonic universe is still detectable today as a faint glow of microwave radiation that is visible in all directions. This radiation is known as the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

Croatians are extremely proud of this historical city, which is a strange mix of the past and the present. Even though it looks like a medieval town, its inhabitants stroll around confidently in the latest fashions. As I came across from Italy on the ferry, the styles and attitudes seemed exactly the same. There are actually two Dubrovniks, one which looks like a typical Mediterranean coastal town, and the other being the beautiful walled historical city, which, seen from above, looks like a hexagon-shaped jigsaw piece. I was completely taken aback by the sheer beauty of the old town as I had arrived along the main road with no idea what to expect. Suddenly I was faced with the imposing Pile Gate, and what looks like a long stone drawbridge. Once within those city walls, there's so much to see it's difficult to know where to explore first. My eyes took in every detail of the medieval and Renaissance buildings. Wherever I went I always seemed to end up in the wide cobbled main street known as the Placa. And with no cars or motorbikes allowed in the old town, it's easy to imagine yourself back in the 17th century, when locals milled around the main concourse going about their daily business.

The morning began with a huge assembly for all the children from different schools which were visiting that day. All together there were about 300 children there. After singing together, everyone went into their groups with a pilgrim guide for the rest of the day. We had two groups and our pilgrim guide took us around a series of activities for our groups. These included things like visiting the Lady Chapel, trying on clothes that pilgrims would have worn in the Middle Ages, making Jerusalem Crosses, looking at the Minster windows and statues and the activities that go on in the church. At the end of the day we had another short service before travelling back to school on the bus.
