In the two decades since the performance of the first human heart transplant in December 1967, the procedure has changed from an experimental operation to an established an experimental operation to an established treatment for advanced heart disease. For one thing, primary criteria for judging the outcome was patients’ subjective rating of their symptoms and they just can’t remember. "A patient recollecting how they were simply doesn’t work," says Freed, in retrospect.
