Sports September 7, 2000 Trampolines Join the Olympics Trampolines Come of Age At each Olympic Games, new sports are added to the list of competitions. One new sport to debut in Sydney, Australia, is trampolining. What is trampolining, and why is it just now being recognized as an international sport? Trampolines got their name from a circus acrobat named Du Trampolin, who lived in the 1800s. He saw that trapeze safety nets could be turned into an independent propulsion device for stunts. Acrobats began to use the revised nets for performing multiple somersaults over rows of large animals, like horses and elephants. In the early 1930s, American gymnast George Nissen developed a modern trampoline closely related to the present-day form. The U.S. Air Force and NASA have both used the trampolines in training pilots and astronauts respectively. Physical and occupational therapists have also found that trampolines can help rehabilitate patients with certain disabilities. Trampolining as a sport began in the United States in the late 1940s. It spread to Europe a few years later. In 1964 the International Trampoline Federation (FIT) was formed with seven founding members. Today there are member federations from 42 countries. Trampolining gradually became less prominent in the United States due to safety concerns and a number of lawsuits filed by injured athletes. At the Sydney Olympics, the sport will be dominated by European and former Soviet Union countries.
Trampoline Tumbling s competitive roots go back even further than that of trampolining. It was even an olympic Sport in 1932 when F. Wolfe, USA, was the winner. http://www.thewere.com/gymnastics/tramp.html

Like diving, style is just as important as the substance of the routine. Artistry and grace have as much part to play as mastering the technicalities. Each routine must display 10 recognised skills, which include: Seven judges score a trampoline routine. Five of them rate how well the different moves were performed during the routine while two rate the degree of difficulty of the different skills performed. Points are awarded for the performances and then adjusted according to the degree of difficulty involved. Imperfections Like the other events, the five judges monitoring the performance deduct points from a starting mark of 10 for faults or imperfections that they detect.

Gymnastics Ontario is incredibly proud of Canada's performance in Sydney at the 2000 Olympic Games. Karen Cockburn, Mathieu Turgeon and coach Dave Ross created a magical moment for all of us to cherish for years to come when they won their Olympic Bronze Medals. Their combined effort, talent and dedication resulted in a historic achievement as Trampoline made its debut as an Olympic sport. Gymnastics Ontario is honoured to have played a role in their development, and we applaud their efforts as they positively lead the next generation of Canadian athletes into the future. T rampoline requires tremendous leg strength, endurance and phenomenal air sense (spatial orientation). To have some 'dare devil' tendencies is a definite asset as they fly through the air performing somersaulting and twisting skills with grace and agility. The best trampolinists in the world jump in excess of 30 feet above the trampoline with cat like precision. A thletes perform a compulsory routine consisting of 10 pre-set elements. The routine is judged only on the performance - execution. The Voluntary Routine consists of 10 elements chosen by the competitor and is evaluated on execution and degree of difficulty. In both cases, the 10 elements must be performed one after the other, with no breaks or extra jumps in between. The trampoline itself consists of a metal frame with a woven '7 x 14' bed with springs that propel the body upwards. All skills must originate and be completed on the bed, ideally never straying from the centre mark.

Extractions: Trampoline and Power Tumbling is the newest Olympic Sport. In the fall of 1999 we started a Tumbling and Trampoline Program at Airborne. Our goal is to provide a venue for students who want to increase tumbling skills for other sports, and gymnastics team members who want to increase their tumbling skills. This new sport encompasses four events: trampoline, double mini-trampoline, synchronized trampoline, and power tumbling. In the Junior Olympic program, an athlete may choose one or more events to compete. There are ten levels and up to six age groups. Size and body types are not nearly as important in trampoline and tumbling as in gymnastics. People of all ages and body types are capable of performing because of the unique spring devices used in trampoline and tumbling. Trampoline and Tumbling are specific to diving, cheerleading, acro skiing, jump roping, sport parachuting, snowboarding and many other sports that require the athlete to develop kinesthetic awareness ("air sense"). Tumbling Class Schedule: See Gymnastics Schedule for Tumbling & Trampoline ("T&T") Classes.
Extractions: Or for that matter this year's addition to the Olympic canon, its cousin, synchronized diving? There are three ways an activity can come into the Olympics: as a completely new sport; as a discipline, a branch of an existing sport; or as an event, a competition within a discipline. Triathlon is making its Olympic debut as a sport in Sydney; trampoline, which is part of gymnastics, is a new discipline; and women's pole vaulting the latest track and field event. Continue Article The first step to becoming a recognized sport of the Summer Games requires being organized into an international federation and having male participants in at least 75 countries on four continents and female participants in at least 40 countries on three continents. Once the International Olympic Committee votes to recognize a federation, the next step becomes a matter of lobbying. This is supposed to be done without the help of that now-banned Olympic activity, bribery. The IOC now recognizes 31 federations in everything from bridge to korfball (it is beyond Explainer's capacity to explain korfball Since the IOC wants to keep the number of athletes to the current 10,000 (!), it also helps if a sport has telegenic participants, which may be why triathlon made it from recognized international federation to medal sport in a swift 11 years, and bowling, recognized since 1979, languishes. (Their new Olympic marketing campaign slogan: "Strike Gold.")

Extractions: Home Bowling Articles by Don Wright The Sydney 2000 Olympics Are Great, But Where Is Bowling? I don't care if it's tape delayed, I'm hooked on the Olympics even though the television bureaucrats insist on only showing the high profile athletes. Track and Field, swimming and gymnastics are the television big three. Okay, if you channel surf enough you'll find some boxing, water polo and some other events buried on MSNBC, but they won't make prime time television other than for Bob Costas to casually tell us about it prior to a commercial. And, sadly, I believe that would be the fate of bowling if it were to become an Olympic sport. I would love to see bowling as a medal sport in the Olympics and this is a highly debatable topic with pros and cons easily debated. I know many a bowling writer who believes we should give up our quest to get into the Olympics. And, there are many in the media who believe that bowling should be considered a recreation and not a sport. That's another column. However, bowling meets all the criteria established by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC insists that the sport be played on all five continents; played in at least 75 countries and is played by both men and women. Bowling does all this. In fact, bowling could be a sport in which the men and women compete equally. At the present time equestrian is the only sport to have that.

Extractions: 28 October 2003 Media Release World Age Group Games for Trampoline, Hannover GERMANY Nani Vercruyssen (11 yr old 6th grade student at Hokulani Elementary School and Hawaii Academy) returned from Germany today a world ranked athlete and national celebrity in the new Olympic sport of trampoline. Nani is the Hawaii State Champion, the Regional (26 Western States) Champion, US National Champion and is now ranked 6th in the world on trampoline (5th on double mini-trampoline) Nani is possibly the fastest improving trampolinist in America (e.g., Level 6 to elite, beginner to national champion, competitor in two international elite competitions, and member of two US national teams all in 18 months). She trains over 30 hours per week but, unlike most other US elite athletes who are home schooled, still manages to remain in a public school and to keep up with her academics and social activities. She now trains for competitions that are exclusively for elites and that ranks the elites for selection onto national teams for international events. In July 2003 Nani became a Level 10 national champion and was invited to move to elites. In August she competed with other elites to earn a spot on the American team competing in Germany 16-26 October at the World Age Group Games (she was 1st ranked on double mini-trampoline and 4th ranked on trampoline). Last weekend Nani competed against national champions from over 36 countries (over 1000 competitors in four age groups: 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, and 17+). She was among few from the US to make the finals (top 6), against very strong teams Russia, China, Japan, etc. At this competition she performed more flips and twists in her 10-bounce routine than anyone in her age group and ended up 6th overall on trampoline and 5th overall on the double mini-trampoline. This is the biannual event that determines world rank among athletes. The ceremonies were similar to those in the Olympic Games.
