Extractions: Building Construction Site Type of Activities: This project requires a vast amount of hands-on experimentation, data analysis, cooperative/interdisciplinary learning, community involvement, and job shadowing/career awareness as students examine an area of land and assess its suitability for construction purposes. Target Audience: I utilize this project in biology classes after the students have completed a unit of study on ecosystems. This project is designed to apply all of the knowledge and skills that the students have mastered. This project would also be very well suited for environmental studies. Background Information This is the final project after an extensive study of ecosystems. I spend nearly nine weeks on ecosystems. I cover plants and animals, climatology, types of ecosystems, components of ecosystems, cycles in ecosystems, and changes in ecosystems. Only after the students have completed these tasks are they able to carry out this project. The students will be assigned an area of land. This land must be closely examined and studied to assess its suitability for construction purposes. I have the luxury of team teaching this activity with our building trades instructor. We combine our classes for the duration of the project. I teach the biological aspects of the project while he focuses on the construction and business side of the project. We select an actual future construction site. The stages of the project are listed below.

Extractions: Great successes have developed through partnerships dedicated to providing decent and affordable housing to Michigan's low-income citizens, and to assist in the reentry of inmates into society. These partners provide products, services, and their expertise to the Prison Build Program. We are grateful. A brief introduction is provided on who are partners are, and what their contribution, as well as a further link to their websites is provided. Our desire and ability to partner with a variety of organizations is based on a win-win approach. Without this integrated approach, the system is interrupted. The following major players assist in this endeavor: Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC): Wardens and staff have implemented a build and delivery system not previously in place; building trades instructors not only teach course content, but orchestrate the actual building of housing components; chaplains assist in the re-integration of the parolee into society.

Extractions: Construction Trades Council I want to take this opportunity to thank all those building trades workers and their families and friends who worked so hard to defeat Proposition 226 , as well as those who voted against it. If you are not one of those who worked in the campaign, you owe a thank you to those who did. Also, all of us need to make a commitment to be active when the next anti-worker issue comes before us. I keep hearing congratulations, I didn't think you could do it. Some coming from union people. My answer? Why weren't you involved. I was not surprised that once the working people, especially union workers, heard the effects of Proposition 226 it would be voted down. Unlike some of the sponsors and radio talk hosts, I don't think workers are a bunch of saps or fools. They understand perfectly how Proposition 226 would affect their standard of living. All it takes is to be sure working people get the proper information and they will make the right decision as to what is best for their livelihood.
Extractions: Construction Trades Council As the Presidential election starts to come to the voters's attention, George Bush Jr. appears to be the anointed candidate for the Republicans. The only discussion seems to be who will be his vice president candidate and will his campaign fund match the national budget. And Al Gore is somewhat in the same position with the Democrats, but there is a slight chance Bill Bradley could overtake Gore, depending on rather the good or the bad of the Clinton Administration rub off on him. Now is also the time the anti-worker organizations come out from under the rocks to peddle their misery. Now is the time these anti-worker organizations start throwing money around attached to their anti-worker legislation. Now is the time they use the promise of contributions to pressure a congressperson or senator in a marginal district to support legislation that weakens workers rights' wages and benefits. And guess who just crawled out from under their own rock after a long hibernation but the construction workers old nemesis the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). They have been pretty quiet politically for the last few years after getting their ears pinned back on both prevailing wages and project labor agreements. But now is the time to fire up their anti-workers rhetoric, disguised as the American way.

Extractions: Walls and ceiling surfaces are usually where a building occupant first notices mold. Sometimes, it arises in cold spots where insulation is inadequate or has settled over time. Mold often shows up first as a stain from a water leak, gradually getting darker as the mold colonizes within the damp area. Inevitably, we all point at the wall or ceiling first, even if it is far removed from the actual source of moisture penetration and mold growth. Mold growth in buildings should be considered a mishap, not an inevitable consequence of age. Such mishaps are fully preventable and fully fixable. The more every contractor knows about how to prevent mold growth, the more likely we are to build good buildings that stay free of microbial contamination.

Extractions: Building Contractors Supply and Demand On the Eastern Shore of Virginia key: economics, building contractors, technical education, eastern shore of virginia A brief overview of the trades. Who hasn't heard it "I can't get anyone to even come and give me an estimate, let alone do the work!" or "My business can't find enough people who are steady and ready to work every day, let alone have skills or smarts!" There are (some) answers to these complaints. The entry level work-force is not well trained, but there are several plans now afoot to provide training. There are a number of well respected contractors, but not enough to service demand. More may emerge locally, but "across the Bay" and "up the road" businesses are seeking and getting - a market share here on the Shore. In Vocational Education, nowadays known as Technical Education, much is changing. There are currently three local sources of training: Eastern Shore Community College, the Accomack and Northampton school systems, and a small federally funded program called Build For the Future. This year's goal is to build three houses for low income residents of Fairview, and to "graduate" the students into jobs in the larger community. This program has funding, but needs more participation. If you have difficulties manning programs with trainees, then perhaps it is true that there is a shortage of motivated, trainable people. Hopefully that's not so, and this program will gain the numbers it should be serving.

Extractions: His work so impressed Swarthmore's Geometry Forum that they now host a special section on Math to Build On, including the superb sections on measuring angles, degrees and right triangles. If you ever wondered whether you couldn't understand Math because of your own inadequacy or the teacher's inability you owe it to yourself to read Johnny Hamilton." Popular Mechanics - Roy Berendsohn (May 1997) "...we can pose three reasons to buy Math To Build On . One is that you need help with your math, and the second is that you're good at math but you need a handy reference for areas, volumes, conversions, and basic trigonometry. The third reason is that one of your kids needs help in math. To a large extent, the book's success derives from the the fact that the authors are not professional mathematicians. They haven't forgotten how ordinary people can struggle with math." Fine Homebuilding - Scott Gibson (December 1993 / January 1994) "Based on the idea that math is a practical skill...Learn enough about triangles, for instance, and you'll learn how to lay out conduit or ductwork correctly and quickly. The text is easy to follow and has plenty of diagrams and sample problems...the authors' approach really makes sense."

Grand Ideas For The Nation's Heritage - 23 23 Equip the building trades with an understanding firms, not only historic buildingspecialists but further education colleges who teach trainee bricklayers http://www.savebritainsheritage.org/25/25-23.htm
Extractions: In many parts of the country, even if an owner recognises that they require builders with a knowledge of traditional skills to repair an historic building, it can be very difficult to find one. There are simply no longer enough firms with these skills . Many of these skills are not necessarily difficult to learn and could be acquired by general building firms, not only historic building specialists - but the will and motivation is often lacking. The scale of the problem is vast. One solution, a long-term measure advocated by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), is to train the lecturers at further education colleges who teach trainee bricklayers, roofers, joiners etc, traditional building techniques and ensure that these skills are a component of GNVQ courses. SPAB also emphasises the incalculable importance of practical experience. At Stowe the National Trust is hoping to establish a project to take on trainee tradesmen and put them to work under supervision on the restoration of the miles of boundary walls as part of their training. The Getty Grant Fund pioneered making such training a condition of grant aid. It should now become a condition of repair and restoration projects grant aided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw and the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland.
