My outrage is not at the encouragement of setting quality standards, but rather at limiting contracts to bidders with "state-approved apprentice programs." Apparently the federal ban on closed shops due to the Taft-Hartley Act, because it infringes on people's freedom of expression, is only an infringement of the unions' benefit instead of the state. The state may demand certain expectations and funds out of training the labor, but it becomes unconstitutional when the idea spawns to a union. Even though the content-area exams are available in several native languages, and oral translations may be provided to students who speak low incidence languages, I am troubled by this policy. I understand and agree with the concept of holding all students to higher standards and holding schools accountable for educating all students. However, I believe that insisting all ESL students take all content-area tests is an unrealistic and unfair standard.

There are so many facets to understanding fractional measurements that it is impossible to guess what each person is having trouble with (is it fractions themselves? Or could it be the problem that most things are not measurable in simple fractions? Or could it be technique in actually carrying out the measurement? etc) However, there are many concrete objects (wood planks, screw size, nail length, etc.) which demand measurements accurate to the 16th inch. Perhaps if you make them try to build something which demands such accuracy, they will be forced to understand the importance of measuring to the 16th inch. He's a hometown guy and he's an elevator construction guy who has gone all the way to the top. You and I have many things in common. We love our country. We know it needs a new direction. And we believe that our rights as Americans include the right to organize. But you and I have something else in common too. The Republican leadership has attacked our freedom to speak and even our very patriotism. Recently Tom Delay tried to make a political issue of my call for new leadership. Well, I refuse to have my patriotism questioned by him or anyone else. I fought for and bled for and earned the right to express my views in this country. If they want to pick a fight, they've picked a fight with the wrong guy. And they clearly picked the wrong fight when they questioned your patriotism and valor. Three months ago, Tom Delay said organized labor "exploited World War II." And he said that now you're a quote "clear and present danger to the security of the United States at home and the safety of our Armed Forces oversees."

In the past, we have offered one-day workshops around the state of Arkansas. These one-credit courses are open to anyone and focus on specific preservation issues. Our students, who attended AIBPT, have wide varieties of experiences and prior experience is not neccesary. The instructional method is centered on teaching the correct way(s) to approach a problem and conclude with a solution. In other words, learn to do it right first, then a person can become faster at doing it.
