Extractions: Farm Equipment Farm machinery and equipment that has been submerged by flood water requires special attention before it is put back in service. Failure to take proper precautions can lead to extensive damage to the equipment and to possible injury or illness to persons working with or around the equipment. The following outline should help determine the proper action. Prompt action on the part of the equipment owner is the key to successfully restoring equipment. The longer you wait to take action, the greater the risk of serious equipment damage. However, do not attempt to retrieve equipment from flood waters if you cannot do so safely. Wait until the water recedes rather than risk injury. Determine how far the equipment was submerged under water. How much of the machine was under water will determine how extensive the reconditioning work will be. For example, on engine powered equipment, water depth around the engine area is a critical concern. Likewise, take note of any power trains, axles, or other elements that were submerged. If possible, document the situation with photographs or take notes for later evaluation. Move the equipment to a safe location where further clean up and reconditioning can be performed. Do not attempt to retrieve equipment from flood waters if you can not do so safely. Do not start the engine on any machine if the flood water may have reached the engine level. Do not attempt to drive a machine if the power train was submerged. Avoid towing equipment for great distances. Load equipment on a trailer for transport if possible. Implements may be hitched to a tractor for transport to the reconditioning area..

Second, these farmers want to employ teenagers who have completed certified training in the operation of tractors and farm machinery before spring work begins. Only a few opportunities exist for teenagers to enroll in a certified training program for the operation of tractors and farm machinery and virtually all the certified training programs offered occur in the months of June and July . Response In response to the problem of offering a tractor and farm machinery safety certification course for teenagers prior to the start of spring field work, Osceola County Extension and Clay County Extension collaborated with stakeholders in the two counties to offer a certified course March 23, 24, 30 and 31, 2001. Funding was provided for the program by registration fees from the students and donations from seven local businesses. Equipment for the program was donated by two local farm equipment dealers, four individual farmers, plus a local farmer and his family donated the use of their farmstead and equipment for one day of on-the-farm training. Twenty-one individuals volunteered their time as instructors for the course. Class size was limited to twenty students and twenty students enrolled and successfully completed the course.
